What is computer storage?
The storage drive is where your computer permanently saves documents, photos, music, videos, and other files.

More storage means your computer can hold more information.

We measure storage in gigabytes (GB) or terabytes (TB). A terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes.

How much storage is right for you?
Storage Performance level Best for...
1 TB to 4 TB Ultra-enthusiast Gaming enthusiasts who need to store a large library of games and files. Also great for storing video recordings and creative content.
512 GB Enthusiast Sufficient storage for storing and saving games, high-resolution pictures, and music libraries. Ideal for saving a few larger games.
256 GB Performance Adequate storage for small or general gaming on a budget, libraries of music or photos, and high school or college coursework.
What else do you need to know about storage?
A solid-state drive, or SSD, is often used for primary "boot" storage. It can start and run applications faster than a computer with a hard disk drive, or HDD. Some solid-state drives have either a Non-RAID, RAID 0 or a RAID 1 array as they combine two or more disk drives into one logical unit for storage.

A Non-RAID drive allows user to add additional drives as needed to increase storage without the need to reformat existing data.

A RAID 0 drive stores data across dual drives. Though it provides faster read and write speeds than RAID 1 drive, data is susceptible to loss when backup is missing.

A RAID 1 drive stores data to both drives simultaneously and gives users two data copies. It offers reliable storage and makes data recovery easy.
