A modem is a device that allows the computer to talk to other computers through the phone system. Basically, modems do for computers what a telephone does for humans.
Modem type defines the capability of a modem. Data/Fax Modems are capable of sending/receiving data/fax over the internet, while modems with voice capability allow for voice communication. The modem speed determines how fast the data can be transmitted or voice communicated. Please note that you will require related software to avail the modem capabilities. Some modems come with this software.
The modems come in two types Data/Fax, Data Fax/Voice. Data/Fax type of modem works as a data only modem. Data Fax/Voice modem can transfer both data and voice. The data transfer rate is also an important factor. The higher the data transfer rate, the faster you can send and receive data. Some modems also include additional accessories like Drivers CD or Driver Kit.
If you own a desktop, you will need to make sure that the modem is compatible with the form factor of your PC. A low profile modem will not work with a full height desktop and vice versa. Hence, we recommend that you use the System Drill down and Service Tag look up features in the Parts For Your Dell™ tool. These features will allow us to match the system type / form factor compatibility and recommend the correct products.
