Help Me Choose: Chassis Options for Wyse Thin Clients

Chassis, drives and integrated CAC SmartCard reader options for Wyse thin clients

The chassis is the structural framework of the thin client which houses the core hardware components and is typically not upgradable or interchangeable after manufacturing assembly. Chassis options are preassembled with one or more critical component options to ensure architectural integrity and optimal functionality. In general, having adequate additional drive and storage may help extend the usable lifespan of your Wyse thin client as your system computing needs grow.

Wyse thin clients offer both eMMC Flash and solid-state drive (SSD) primary storage options to host the firmware and local applications with eligible operating systems. Flash and SSD components have no moving parts, are quiet and fast.

eMMC (embedded MMC) Flash memory also referred to as the “eMMC flash chip” is a memory-card standard used for solid-state storage. The memory card components (flash memory plus controller) are an embedded non-volatile memory system that is not removable and is directly attached to the circuit board.

A solid-state drive (SSD) is a non-volatile storage device that has no moving components and stores persistent data on solid-state flash memory.

Common Access Card (CAC) reader is a component that reads a common access card (CAC) also known as a “smart card”. A smart card is about the size of a credit card and holds an integrated circuit chip (ICC). The CAC is designed to provide two-factor authentication through (1) insertion of the physical card into the CAC reader and (2) the use of the security PIN (Personal Identification Number). CAC technology allows for rapid authentication and enhanced physical and logical security.

Please note: Unless conducting regular maintenance or application and driver installs or upgrades, it is important to keep the “Write Filter” of thin clients with Windows 10 IoTE turned on to prevent premature wear of the Flash or SSD storage components.
