How to Upgrade Dell Security Management Server Virtual \ Dell Data Protection Virtual Edition


This article covers how to upgrade Dell Security Management Server Virtual (formerly Dell Data Protection | Virtual Edition).

Note: In-place upgrades require an active internet connection from Dell Security Management Server Virtual to act.credant.com

The upgrade of Dell Security Management Server Virtual varies between versions. Click on the Dell Security Management Server Virtual version running in your environment for specific steps. For versioning information, reference How to Identify the Version of Dell Security Management Server Virtual.

To download and run the upgrade:

  1. Log in to the Dell Enterprise Server Virtual administration console.

Note:
  • The default credentials for Dell Security Management Server Virtual are:
    • Username: delluser
    • Password: delluser
  • An administrator can change the default password within the product’s virtual appliance menu.
  1. From the Main Menu, select Basic Configuration and then press enter.

  1. Select Update Dell Security Management Server Virtual and then press enter.

  1. Select Install Updates and then press enter.

  1. Select Yes and then press enter.

  1. Select Yes and then press enter.

  1. If the installation becomes unresponsive, press Enter.

  1. From the database access menu:
    1. Optionally, enable remote access for IPv4.
    2. Optionally, enable remote access for IPv6.
    3. Enter the new database password.
    4. Confirm the new database password.
    5. Select Reboot Appliance and then press enter.

Version 9.10.1 requires a manual upgrade to version 9.11 or later.

To upgrade the server:

  1. On your current Dell Security Management Server Virtual:
    1. Stop services
    2. Create a backup
    3. Offload the backup to an external location
    4. Shut down the Dell Security Management Server Virtual instance.
  1. Install a new instance of Dell Security Management Server Virtual v9.11 or later.

  1. Load the backup (step 1c) into the new instance of Dell Security Management Server Virtual
  2. On the new instance of Dell Security Management Server Virtual, restore the backup (step 3).
  3. Once the new instance has been tested and verified, decommission the legacy Dell Security Management Server Virtual (step 1).

To download the upgrade:

  1. Log in to the Dell Enterprise Server Virtual administration console.

Note:
  • The default credentials for Dell Data Protection Enterprise Server Virtual Edition are:
    • Username: ddpuser
    • Password: ddpuser
  • An administrator can change the default password within the product’s virtual appliance menu.
  1. From the Main Menu, select Basic Configuration and then press enter.

  1. Select Update Dell Security Management Server Virtual and then press enter.

  1. Select Download Update and then press enter.

  1. Once the download has completed, press enter to continue.

To upgrade the server:

  1. Log in to the Dell Enterprise Server Virtual administration console.

Note:
  • The default credentials for Dell Data Protection Enterprise Server Virtual Edition are:
    • Username: ddpuser
    • Password: ddpuser
  • An administrator can change the default password within the product’s virtual appliance menu.
  1. From the Main Menu, select Basic Configuration and then press enter.

  1. Select Update Dell Security Management Server Virtual and then press enter.

  1. Select Apply Update and then press enter.

  1. Select the desired update file to be installed and then press enter.

Note:
  • The update file may vary based on the above example.
  • A "pending policy commit detected" error may occur after selecting the update file. To resolve the issue, reference How to Commit Policies for Dell Data Security. Once resolved restart the Install Update steps.
  1. Upon successful installation, the server will automatically reboot itself.

Note: The Update Installation Status example may differ based on your version.
  1. Log in to the server.

  1. On log in, the server update will be confirmed. Press enter on OK to return to the Administration Console.

  1. Enter and then re-enter the new database password. Once populated, select OK, and then press enter.

To download the upgrade:

  1. Log in to the Dell Enterprise Server Virtual administration console.

Note:
  • The default credentials for Dell Data Protection Enterprise Server Virtual Edition are:
    • Username: ddpuser
    • Password: ddpuser
  • An administrator can change the default password within the product’s virtual appliance menu.
  1. From the Main Menu, select Basic Configuration and then press enter.

  1. Select Update DDP Enterprise Server – VE, then press enter.

  1. Select Download Update and then press enter.

  1. Once the download has completed, press enter to continue.

To upgrade the server:

  1. Log in to the Dell Enterprise Server Virtual administration console.

Note:
  • The default credentials for Dell Data Protection Enterprise Server Virtual Edition are:
    • Username: ddpuser
    • Password: ddpuser
  • An administrator can change the default password within the product’s virtual appliance menu.
  1. From the Main Menu, select Basic Configuration and then press enter.

  1. Select Update DDP Enterprise Server – VE, then press enter.

  1. Select Apply Update and then press enter.

  1. Select the update file to be installed and press enter.

Note:
  • The update file may vary based on the above example.
