How to Reset the MEBx Password - KB Article - 334711

MEBx Password Reset Instructions

Before you perform any of the following steps, read the Precautionary Measures warning (located in the Resources/Additional Resources section) for your personal safety and to prevent damage to the computer system from electrostatic discharge.

  1. For security reasons, verify the identity of the user prior to assisting with MEBx password reset.

  2. Disconnect the AC adapter from the computer.

  3. Disconnect all peripheral devices from the computer.

  4. Turn the computer upside down and place it on a clean, secure work surface.

  5. Remove the battery


    For more information on removing the battery, hinge cover, and keyboard, refer to the Online User's Guide for this system.

  6. Turn the computer right side up and open the LCD to 180°.

  7. Remove the Hinge Cover (Figure 1).

    Insert Plastic Scribe or Other Non-abrasive Flat-edged Tool and Pry Gently.
    Lift Hinge Cover Up and to the Left to Remove.

  8. Remove the three screws securing the keyboard (Figure 2).

  9. Rotate the keyboard toward the front of the computer until it is upside down. Do not unplug the keyboard (Figure 2).

  10. Unplug the Coin-cell battery (Figure 3).

  11. Wait one minute, then reconnect the coin-cell battery.

  12. Replace the keyboard.

  13. Replace the hinge cover.

  14. Replace the Battery.

Verify the MEBx password has been reset to the default by doing the following:

  1. Restart your computer.

  2. Press and hold <Ctrl> while tapping <P> at the Dell logo screen to enter the Intel Management Engine BIOS Extension (MEBx) screens.

  3. Type in the default password, admin, and press <Enter>.

  4. If the message Password Mismatch appears, the MEBx password reset was not successful and the MEBx password reset process must be repeated.
