Issue: The ATA Security Feature Set is Not Supported by Any Dell™ PERC RAID Controllers

There is a security specific set of features that are defined in the ATA specification for SATA drives. Some of the features defined in the specification define functions like password protecting the drive, setting admin rights on the drive, and probably the most notorious feature, performing an Instant Secure Erase on the drive. Instant Secure Erase is a widely desired feature for Solid State Drive users because it allows the user to easily remove data from the drive.

However, the ATA Security Feature set is not supported on Dell PERC RAID controllers.

There are only two options for a secure physical disk on Dell servers at this time.

1. Use SAS Secure Encrypted Drives (SED) attched to a Dell RAID controller that supports SED.
Here is the current list of RAID controllers that support SED as of 3/21/2013:
  • PERC H700
  • PERC H800
  • PERC H710
  • PERC H710P

2. Use SATA drives that support the ATA Security Feature set direct attached to a SATA chipset (ICH) and use the vendor provided utility that supports that particular drive.
