  1. Open and close the front cover.
    1. Open the front cover (Figure 1).

  2. Reseat the fuser.
    1. Turn off the printer and wait for 30 minutes.
    2. Push the side button and open the front cover. (Figure 1)

    3. Lift the duplex gate to its upright position. (Figure 2)

    4. Release the levers at both ends of the fuser. (Figure 3)

    5. Hold both sides of the installed fuser, and then pull inward lightly and then upward. (Figure 4)

    6. With the connector of the fuser toward the slot, push the connector into the slot firmly. (Figure 5)
      Make sure that the fuser is firmly fixed in the slot and cannot be moved easily.

    7. Lock both levers at the ends of the fuser. (Figure 6)

    8. Lower the paper-transfer chute to its horizontal position. (Figure 7)

    9. Close the front cover. (Figure 8)

  3. Reseat the duplexer.
    1. Remove any print jobs from the center output tray and close the multipurpose feeder cover before opening the front cover.
    2. Make sure the printer is powered off.
    3. Push the side button and open the front cover (Figure 1).

    4. Hold the handles of the transfer belt as shown (Figure 2) and open the unit fully.
      Caution:
      Do not touch the inside of the printer. Some parts may be hot. Allow time for the printer to cool before attempting to remove parts in this area.

    5. Hold both sides of the transfer belt with both hands and pull up the right side of the unit until the peg on the right side comes out of the groove (Figure 3).

    6. Shift the transfer belt to the right and remove the unit from the printer.
    7. Release the lock by pulling the lever of the duplex module, and then raise the module (Figure 4).

    8. Release the two tabs on the back side of the duplex module from the holes on the front cover, then remove the duplex module.
    9. Check that the cap covering the duplexer connection has been removed (Figures 5 and 6).

    10. Check that the duplexer connection is attached to the receiving end of the printer (Figures 7 and 8).

    11. Perform steps 3-10 in reverse order to reassemble the printer.
  4. Inspect the duplex gate for damage.
    1. Turn off the printer and wait for 30 minutes. Push the side button and open the front cover (Figure 1).

    2. Lift the duplex gate to its upright position (Figure 2). The duplex gate should freely pivot vertically with no lateral (side-to-side) motion. Ensure that neither one of the pivot pins (located on either side of the duplex gate) are broken.

      If the duplex gate is damaged, replace it.
  5. Inspect the exit chute for damage.
    1. Open the front cover (Figure 1).

    2. With the top cover open, visually inspect the exit chute for damage (Figure 2). There should be no burrs, and the rollers should rotate freely.

      Note:
      There is no need to unscrew the exit chute from the front cover. The image shows the exit chute detached from the front cover in order to more easily distinguish it from the background.
    3. Close the front cover (Figure 3).

      If the exit chute is damaged, replace the front cover.
  6. Run diagnostics on the duplexer jam sensor.
    1. Make sure the printer is powered off.
    2. Push the side button and open the front cover (Figure 1)

    3. Hold the handles of the belt unit / transfer belt as shown (Figure 2) and open the unit fully.
      Caution:
      Do not touch the inside of the printer. Some parts may be hot. Allow time for the printer to cool before attempting to remove parts in this area.

    1. Hold both sides of the belt unit / transfer belt with both hands and pull up the right side of the unit until the peg on the right side comes out of the groove (Figure 3).

    2. Shift the belt unit / transfer belt to the right and remove the unit from the printer.
    3. Hold down the and buttons on the printer and power the printer on.
    4. Release your fingers from the keys when the message Diagnosing... appears, which then displays Customer Mode and ESS Diag.
    5. Press the button until IOT Diag appears and press the button.
    6. When Digital Input appears on the LCD, press the button until Digital Input appears, and then press the button.
    7. Press the or button until DI-1 appears, and then press the button twice.
    8. Toggle the actuator on the duplexer, which causes the counter on the Operator Panel to increase by 1. If the counter does not increase by 1, replace the duplexer.
    9. Press the Cancel button to stop this test.
    10. Power the printer off.
    11. Perform steps 3 through 5 in reverse to reinstall the belt unit / transfer belt, and then power on the printer.
  7. Run diagnostics on the duplexer clutch.
    1. Power off the printer.
    2. Close all printer covers and doors.
    3. Hold down the and buttons on the printer and power the printer on.
    4. Release your fingers from the keys when the message Diagnosing... appears.
      Customer Mode and ESS Diag are displayed.
    5. Press the button to select ESS Diag.
    6. Press the button until IOT Diag appears and press the button.
      On the LCD, Digital Input appears.
    7. Press the button until Digital Output appears and press the button.
    8. Press the button until DO-35 READY appears and press the button.
      On the LCD, DO-35 EXEC appears and the motor noise is heard.
    9. Press the Cancel button to stop the test.
      On the LCD, DO-35 READY appears.
    10. Press the Menu button.
    11. Power the printer off and then back on.

      If the diagnostic fails, Please contact Dell Technical Support for further advice.
  8. Run diagnostics on the duplexer motor.
    1. Power off the printer.
    2. Close all printer covers and doors.
    3. Hold down the and buttons on the printer and power the printer on.
    4. Release your fingers from the keys when the message Diagnosing... appears.
      Customer Mode and ESS Diag are displayed.
    5. Press the button to select ESS Diag.
    6. Press the button until IOT Diag appears and press the button.
      On the LCD, Digital Input appears.
    7. Press the button until Digital Output appears and press the button.
    8. Press the button until DO-13 READY appears and press the button.
      On the LCD, DO-13 EXEC appears and the motor noise should be heard.
    9. Press the Cancel button to stop the test.
      On the LCD, DO-13 READY appears.
    10. Press the Menu button.
    11. Power the printer off and then back on.

      If the diagnostic fails, Please contact Dell Technical Support for further advice.
  9. Run diagnostics on the multi-purpose feeder (MPF) turn clutch.
    1. Power off the printer.
    2. Close all printer covers and doors.
    3. Remove the 250-sheet tray. (Figure 1)

    4. Hold down the and buttons on the printer and power the printer on.
    5. Release your fingers from the keys when the message Diagnosing... appears.
      Customer Mode and ESS Diag are displayed.
    6. Press the button to select ESS Diag.
    7. Press the button until IOT Diag appears and press the button.
      On the LCD, Digital Input appears.
    8. Press the button until Digital Output appears and press the button.
    9. Press the button until DO-a READY appears and press the button.
      On the LCD, DO-a EXEC appears and the motor noise should be heard without a grinding noise.
    10. Press the button until DO-2b READY appears and press the button.
      On the LCD, DO-2b EXEC appears and the rollers spin.
    11. Press the Cancel button to stop the test.
      On the LCD, DO-2b READY appears.
    12. Press the Menu button.
    13. Power the printer off.
    14. Replace the 250-sheet tray and then power the printer back on.

      If the MPF does not function properly, Please contact Dell Technical Support for further advice.
  10. Run diagnostics on the feed drive motor.
    1. Power off the printer.
    2. Close all printer covers and doors.
    3. Hold down the and buttons on the printer and power the printer on.
    4. Release your fingers from the keys when the message Diagnosing... appears.
      Customer Mode and ESS Diag are displayed.
    5. Press the button to select ESS Diag.
    6. Press the button until IOT Diag appears and press the button.
      On the LCD, Digital Input appears.
    7. Press the button until Digital Output appears and press the button.
    8. Press the button until DO-a READY appears and press the button.
      On the LCD, DO-a EXEC appears and the motor noise should be heard.
    9. Press the Cancel button to stop the test.
      On the LCD, DO-a READY appears.
    10. Press the Menu button.
    11. Power the printer off and then back on.
