Create A RAID-5 Container Using CLI.

  • 1. PERC 2 hardware is already installed on the system.
  • 2. Only one PERC 2 is present on the system.
  • 3. The PERC 2 SCSI drivers and CLI have been correctly installed, using the default settings.
  • 4. All disks connected to PERC 2 have been initialized for use by PERC 2.
  • 5. A 2 GB container will be created (the procedure is the same no matter what the container size).
  • 6. The container will be created across 5 drives.
  • 7. The container will be created with caching enabled.
  • 8. The container will have no file system or drive letter assigned.
  • 9. The container will be created using the "Scrub" method.
  • 10. The container will be created with the default chunk size of 32KB.

1. Start the CLI utility. From the Windows NT desktop, open a Command Prompt window and enter the command afacli; from Netware, type the command load fastcli at the console prompt.

2. At the CLI prompt (">"), enter the following to establish the logical connection between CLI and the controller:
open afa0

3. Use the following command to show the free space available on all disks:
disk show space
This will display a table showing the SCSI bus number, ID, and LUN for every drive connected to the controller. For each drive, all of the partitions and freespace on the drive will be shown. The column marked "Usage" indicates what the partition is used for (freespace is indicated by the word "Free"). The column marked "Size" displays two numbers, separated by a colon, for each partition. The first number is the offset of the partition from the beginning of the disk, and the second is the size of the partition.

4. Based on the information in this table, choose the disks to be used for the RAID-5 set. The amount of space needed on each disk can be determined by the formula:
Size of RAID-5 set / (Number of drives - 1)
In this case: 2GB / (5-1) = 0.5GB, or 512 MB per disk.
The only requirement is that each disk has a partition marked "Free" that is larger than the required partition size. However, for best performance and redundancy, Adaptec recommends that the partitions have the same offset value and that the disks be located on different SCSI channels.
Write down the bus, ID and LUN values of the disks you have selected.(For purposes of this example, the five disks will be 1:0:0, 1:1:0, 2:0:0, 2:1:0, and 3:0:0).

5. Use the following command to create the RAID-5 set:
container create raid5 /wait ((1,0,0), 512M) (1,1,0) (2,0,0) (2,1,0) (3,0,0)
The numbers in parentheses indicate which disk to use for the RAID-5 set (bus,ID,LUN), and the partition size required on each disk. The size is only specified for the first drive in the list. When specifying the size, use "G" for GB and "M" for MB. Use only whole numbers, not decimals; for example, to create a 1.5 GB partition, use "1536M".

Once the RAID-5 set is created, you will get a message like:
Container 2 created
Once the command prompt returns, the RAID-5 has been created and is fully redundant.
