Article Summary: This article contains information regarding "How to effectively restart a Style UI application in Windows 8.1".
If you want to close a Style UI (Start Screen) application that is not working properly in Windows 8.1 you can just grab the application at the top of the screen and drag it to the bottom of the screen to close it.
In Windows 8.1, Closing an application in this way, removes it from view, but this method doesn’t stop all of the processes associated with the application. Eventually, Windows 8.1 one will stop these processes, but you can manually restart the application without rebooting the system.
To restart an application that is not functioning properly, drag the top of the app toward the bottom of the screen. When just the top half of the app tile is visible stop dragging and wait.
After a few moments the tile will reverse and show the splash screen displayed when you would normally start the application. If you release the tile at this point and the application will close and all associated tasks will terminate.
Instead of closing the application, you can also restart it from this point by simply dragging the reversed tile back up in the screen and releasing it. This will restart the application and all associated tasks without having to reboot the system.
