How to Troubleshoot Touchscreen/Touch Panel Issues



When your touchscreen is not working correctly on your laptop or tablet in Windows 7, 8(8.1) and 10, follow the steps to help resolve the issues you are experiencing.



Please attempt the following steps:
  1. Clean the LCD screen.
    1. Turn off the computer closely examine the condition of the screen.

    2. Take notice of any smudges or areas to be cleaned.

    3. Use a microfiber cloth to remove any obvious dust and gently brush off any dirt particles.

    4. Proper cleaning kits should be used to clean and keep your LCD displays in a crisp clear pristine condition.

    5. Never spray any cleaning solutions directly on to the screen; spray it into the cleaning cloth.

    6. Very gently wipe the screen in a circular motion. Do not press hard on the cloth.

    7. Do not leave any liquid on the screen. Remove all excess moisture as it may damage your screen.

    8. For stains that are hard to remove, repeat this procedure as needed.

    9. Let the LCD screen dry thoroughly before you turn it back on.


  2. When you have installed a screen protector, it may be preventing the touchscreen from registering that you are touching the screen and may need to be removed (this may occur if it is not designed for a capacitive touchscreen or has bubbles in it).

  3. Shut down and restart the computer or tablet.
    Note: When the touchscreen starts responding again, no further actions are needed.


  4. Enable the touchscreen in Device Manager.

    In some rare instances, if the touchscreen is disabled in Windows Device Manager the touch functionality may not work.

    1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
    2. In the Run dialog box, type devmgmt.msc and click OK.
    3. In Device Manager window, expand Human Interface Devices.
    4. Right-click on HID-compliant touch screen and select Enable.
    Note: The Enable option will be available if the touchscreen is disabled. If the Enable option is not available, proceed to the next step.


  5. Calibrate the touchscreen.


    Click on the tab that matches the Operating System (OS) installed on your computer and perform the steps within that section to calibrate the touchscreen.

    1. In the Search box, type calibrate.

    2. Touch or click Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input in the list of programs.

    3. Touch or click the Calibrate button.

    4. You will be asked to touch the crosshair on the screen each time it moves across or down the screen.

    5. Touch or click Yes to save the calibration data.

    6. Touch or click OK.

    1. Press and hold the Windows (Windows Button) key, and then press the q key.

    2. In the Search box, type calibrate.

    3. Touch or click Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input in the list of programs.

    4. Touch or click the Calibrate button.

    5. You will be asked to touch the crosshair on the screen each time it moves across or down the screen.

    6. Touch or click Yes to save the calibration data.

    7. Touch or click OK.

    1. In the Search box, type calibrate.

    2. Touch or click Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input in the list of programs.

    3. Touch or click the Calibrate button.

    4. You will be asked to touch the crosshair on the screen each time it moves across or down the screen.

    5. Touch or click Yes to save the calibration data.

    6. Touch or click OK.


  6. When you have a 2-in-1 laptop running Windows 10, the tablet mode settings may be incorrect and could be causing the touchscreen not to respond, and needs to be changed.   7. Make sure the drivers and the BIOS for your computer are up to date. For information on how to download drivers and the BIOS, refer to Dell Knowledge Base articles How to Download and Install a Driver and What is BIOS and How to Download and Install the latest BIOS?

    Note: The touchscreen driver is native to the operating system. Hence there is no specific touchscreen driver that is required to be downloaded and installed.


  8. Run the online diagnostics to test the touchscreen. For more information refer Dell Knowledge base article How to use the Dell PC Diagnostics.
    Note: The option to just run the Touch screen diagnostics, will be under Test a specific device or create a custom test.
