Alienware Area-51M - Slow Performance after Updating BIOS


Symptom

Alienware Area-51m laptop may experience slow performance issue. This issue is noticed on Alienware Area-51m laptops with nVidia GeForce RTX 2080 only.

Solution Steps

Updating your system to the latest nVidia video or graphics driver and updating the VBIOS will help resolve the issue. To download and install the latest device drivers:

Warning: It is recommended that you disconnect external peripherals like external monitors, external hard disk drives, printers, scanners before updating the VBIOS on your Dell PC.
Warning: Dell recommends running the laptop on AC power during the device driver update process.

Updating the VBIOS

  1. Browse to the Dell Alienware Area-51m Drivers & downloads page
  2. Ensure you have selected the correct Operating System
  3. Under Category, select System Utilities
  4. Locate the latest VBIOS
  5. Click Download and save the file to your PC
  6. Open File Explorer and browse to the location where the downloaded file is saved
  7. Double-click the VBIOS setup file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process
  8. Restart the PC

Updating the nVIDIA Video or Graphics Driver

  1. Browse to the Dell Alienware Area-51m Drivers & downloads page
  2. Ensure you have selected the correct Operating System
  3. Under Category, select Video
  4. Locate the latest nVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060/2070/2080 Driver
  5. Click Download and save the file to your PC
  6. Open File Explorer and browse to the location where the downloaded file is saved
  7. Double-click the VBIOS setup file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process
  8. Restart the PC
