Why should a Travan minicartridge tape not be formatted? - Technical Tip - 166294

Why a Travan Minicartridge Tape Should Not Be Formatted

Some older versions of tape backup software have an option to format a tape. This option should never be used on any Travan type minicartridge. Seagate® minicartridge tape drives are not capable of properly formatting a tape. Tapes are formatted at the factory with special instrumentation that writes information known as servos to the beginning of the tape. If you were to format the tape, this information would not be re-written to the tape, thereby rendering it unusable. Furthermore, formatting a tape would take literally hours upon hours to complete, even if it could be done. This applies to all Travan® type mincartridge tapes, including TR-3, TR-4, and TR-5. If you wish to erase the data on a backed up on a cartridge, the software provided by Seagate has an erase function that can be used. This erase function does not format the tape, nor does it damage the servo information that is necessary for the drive to access the tape properly.
