Printed Pages are Solid Black on the Dell Multifunction Laser Printer 1815dn


Make a copy of a document and print a Windows test page to determine if the problem affects only a single function of the printer.
  • The problem does not occur on copies or the Windows test page: Check the print settings in the application being used. Some applications, especially image viewing or editing applications, have some settings for printing that can affect print resolution and color settings. Check for any print settings including print quality settings, paper size settings, and print modes. Examples of such settings are, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Fit to Page - Expands or reduces the size of an image to fit the printed page. This can seriously reduce image resolution.
    • Grayscale - Prints all colors in grayscale.
    • Photo Color correction - Enhances colors to be brighter on page than on screen to emulate color photo paper.

  • The problem occurs only when printing documents, copies print without problems:
    1. Download and install the latest driver for the printer.
    2. If the problem still persists, swap with a known-good communications cable (USB or network).
      • A known-good cable works, or is not available: Replace the Cable if it was originally purchased from Dell.
      • A known-good cable does not work: Replace the Printer Controller Board.

  • The problem only occurs when copying documents: Check that the documents being copied are not on grey or dark colored paper. Refer to Troubleshooting Copy Defects on the Dell Multifunction Laser Printer 1815dn Solution ID: 130145.

  • The problem occurs on both copied and printed documents:
    1. Reset the factory defaults on the printer.
      1. Press until Menu appears, and then press Select ().
      2. Press until Maintenance appears, and then press Select ().
      3. Press until Clear Settings appears, and then press Select ().
      4. Press until All Settings appears, and then press Select ().
    2. Swap with a known-good toner cartridge, and then attempt to print or copy again.
