DRAC update DUP fails on DTK 4.3 embedded Linux

Article Content

Symptoms

The following error may occur when trying to update iDRAC6 or iDRAC7 with the Dell Update Package of any version:

Failed to access virtual USB device

Resolution

iDRAC7:

It has been determined that the iDRAC7 DUP does not detect the temporary virtual USB partition presented by DRAC for copying over the update payload.  Simply add the following command before proceeding with running the iDRAC7 DUP:

ln –fs /proc/mounts /etc/mtab

The DUP will now properly detect the USB device to proceed applying the iDRAC7 update. Dell Engineering has fixed this issue with DTK 4.4 for Linux.

iDRAC6:

the iDRAC6 update package also requires the aforementioned symlink. However, this USB error will still occur if any iDRAC6 virtual media is connected. This means that the DTK .iso image itself cannot be mounted remotely and booted to in order to update iDRAC6 firmware. It also means vFlash partitions cannot be mounted, either, if a vFlash card and license is installed.

DTK must be burned to a CD for booting or be converted to a USB flash drive or booted from PXE. And once booted to DTK virtual media must be disabled/detached. You can do this either manually via the iDRAC6 web GUI or using DTK commands:

DTK commands:

1. At prompt enter "syscfg --virtualmedia=disable"

2. Then "syscfg --vflash=disable"

Web GUI:

1. System > Media/Console tab > Configuration

2. Change "Virtual Media" menu to "Detach"

3. System > vFlash (if applicable)

4. Uncheck the "Enabled" checkbox
