Windows Server/EQL - Live-Migrating a VM on a Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Cluster with ODX Enabled Results in Corrupt VHD File

Article Summary: This article provides information on an issue in Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V clusters that may result in corrupt VHD files if Offloaded Data Transfer (ODX) is enabled.

On a Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V cluster with Offloaded Data Transfer (ODX) enabled, performing a live migration of a virtual machine (VM) from one cluster node to another may result in corruption of that VM's virtual hard disk (VHD) files.

A Microsoft update is available that resolves this and other issues pertaining to Hyper-V clusters in Windows Server 2012. This update can be obtained from Microsoft at the following location: Update that improves cloud service provider resiliency in Windows Server 2012. This issue was originally addressed in hotfix KB2796995, but this hotfix has since been rolled into the update at the link above.

Prior to the release of the original hotfix, the only known means of resolving the issue was to disable ODX. This is still a workaround that can be implemented if the update cannot be installed. While disabling ODX will avoid the issue discussed in this article, it may also have an adverse effect on the cluster's performance. If necessary, ODX can be disabled using the following procedure:
  1. Open Registry Editor (regedit).
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Filesystem.
  3. Right-click FilterSupportedFeaturesMode in the right pane and click Modify.
  4. Change the value of FilterSupportedFeaturesMode to 1.
  5. Close Registry Editor.

ODX may also be disabled in Windows PowerShell using the following cmdlet:

Set-ItemProperty hklm:\system\currentcontrolset\control\filesystem -Name "FilterSupportedFeaturesMode" -Value 1
