Dell Factory-Installed OS Will Have the Internal USB Ports Turned Off

A system with VMware ESXI factory-installed with other operating systems, like Microsoft Windows or Linux, may have difficulty booting to VMware ESXI.


Systems with a Dell™ factory-installed OS have the internal USB ports disabled by default in order to prevent any connection of any unexpected storage device.

Enabling the System to Boot to the Embedded ESXi Hypervisor

Follow the steps given below to enable the system to boot to the embedded ESXi hypervisor.

  1. Turn on your server.
  2. When the Dell Splash Screen appears, press <F2> to launch the setup menu.
  3. After completion of the system boot, the system BIOS configuration menu appears.
  4. Select Integrated Devices > Internal USB Port > On.
  5. Press Enter, then Esc, and then Enter again to save these changes and reboot.
  6. When the Dell Splash Screen appears, press <F2> to launch the setup menu.
  7. Select Hard Disk as the boot sequence, then select SD Card: Multi Card. Press hyphen (-) to move the SD Card up in the order.
  8. Press Enter > Esc > Enter again to save these changes.
  9. Restart your server.

Dell recommends that other settings should remain unchanged unless you are familiar with the settings. Modifying settings could cause your system to fail to boot or function properly.
