1. Clear the Paper Jam

 

Always remove the remaining paper from the paper tray and straighten the stack when you are adding new paper.
This helps prevent multiple sheets of paper from feeding through the machine at one time and prevents paper jams.

2. Paper is Jammed in the Paper Tray

 

If the machine's control panel or the Status Monitor (for Macintosh only) displays there is a jam in the paper tray, do the following steps.

  1. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine (Figure 1).

  2. Slowly pull out the jammed paper (Figure 2).

    Pulling the jammed paper downward using both hands allows you to remove the paper more easily.
  3. Fan the stack of paper to prevent further jams, and slide the paper guides to fit the paper size (Figure 3).

  4. Make sure the paper is below the "MAX" mark (Figure 4).

  5. Put the paper tray firmly back in the machine.

3. Paper is Jammed at the Back of the Machine

 

If the machine's control panel or the Status Monitor (for Macintosh only) indicates that there is a jam in the back (Rear) of the machine, do the following:

  1. Leave the machine turned on for 10 minutes. This allows the internal fan to cool the extremely hot parts inside the machine.
  2. Open the back cover (Figure 5).

  3. Pull the black tabs at the left and right sides toward you to release the fusing unit cover (Figure 6).

    Warning: HOT SURFACE
    The machine's internal parts will be extremely hot. Wait for the machine to cool down before touching them (Figure 7).

  4. Use both hands to gently pull the jammed paper out of the fusing unit (Figure 8).

  5. Close the fusing unit cover. Make sure the black tabs at the left and right sides lock into place (Figure 9).

  6. Close the back cover until it locks in the closed position.

4. Paper is Jammed Inside the Machine

 

If the machine's control panel or the Status Monitor (for Macintosh only) displays there is a jam inside the machine, do the following steps.

SLN297302_en_US__10icon Caution: Do not attempt to remove a paper jammed deeply inside the product, particularly a paper wrapped around a heat roller. Otherwise, it may cause injuries or burns, and even worse, may generate smoke if you keep operating the product with a paper jammed. Switch off the product promptly and contact your local Dell representative for more information.
 
  1. Leave the machine turned on for 10 minutes for the internal fan to cool the extremely hot parts inside the machine.
  2. Open the front cover (Figure 10).

  3. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly (Figure 11).

    Warning: HOT SURFACE
    Internal parts of the machine will be extremely hot. Wait for the machine to cool down before you touch the internal parts of the machine (Figure 12).

  4. Pull out the jammed paper slowly (Figure 13).

  5. Install the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly into the machine (Figure 14).

  6. Close the front cover of the machine.

5. Paper is Jammed in the 2-Sided Tray

 

If the machine's control panel or the Status Monitor (for Macintosh only) displays there is a jam in the 2-sided paper tray, do the following steps.

  1. Leave the machine turned on for 10 minutes. This allows the internal fan to cool the extremely hot parts inside the machine.
  2. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine (Figure 15).

  3. At the back of the machine, pull the 2‑sided tray completely out of the machine (Figure 16).

  4. Pull the jammed paper out of the machine or out of the 2‑sided tray (Figure 17).

  5. Remove paper that may have jammed under the machine due to static electricity (Figure 18).

  6. If paper is not caught inside the 2-sided tray, open the back cover (Figure 19).

  8. Close the back cover until it locks in the closed position.
  9. Put the 2-sided tray firmly back in the machine.
  10. Put the paper tray firmly back in the machine.
