How Do I Share My Files, Folders, and Printer with Other Computers on My Home Network on the Microsoft® Windows® XP Operating System? - KB Article - 122841

Share a printer on the network.

Complete the following steps on the system in which the printer is attached:

  1. Click the Start button.

  2. Click Control Panel.

  3. Double-click the Printers and Faxes icon.
    The Printers and Faxes window will appear.

NOTENOTE:If Printers and Faxes is not an option, then click the Switch to Classic View link on the left hand side of the window.

  1. Right-click the icon representing your printer.

  2. Click Sharing and Security
    The Sharing and Security window will appear.

  3. Put a check in the Share this Printer box.

  4. Type a name for the printer in the Shared Name box.

  5. Click the Additional Drivers button.

  6. Select the operating systems that are currently installed on your other computers.

  7. Click the OK button.

NOTENOTE:If the necessary files required to complete this operation are not already installed, you may be prompted to insert your Windows® CD.

Complete the following steps on the computers in which the printer is NOT attached:

  1. Install the printer drivers on each computer that will be using the shared printer.

  2. On each of the computers on your network, click the Start button.

  3. Click Control Panel.

  4. Double-click the Printers and Faxes icon.
    The Printers and Faxes window appears.

  5. Click the Add a Printer link on the left side of the window.
    The Add Printer wizard window appears.

  6. Click the Next button.

  7. Click the Network Printer option.

  8. Click the Next button.

  9. Click the Browse button.
    This displays a list of the computers on your home network.

  10. Click the name of the computer that has the printer attached.
    This will list the share name you gave to your printer.

  11. Click the share name given to your printer.
    A Connect to Printer dialog box appears.

  12. Click the Yes button.
    A box appears that says to complete the Add Printer wizard you must click finish.

  13. Click the Finish button.
    Now you will be able to print to your printer using other computers on your network.

Share the Files and Folders

  1. Locate the file or folder that you would like to share with other computers on your home network.

  2. Right-click the file or folder you wish to share.

  3. Click Sharing and Security
    The Sharing and Security window appears.

  4. Click If you understand the security risks but want to share files without running the wizard, click here.
    The Enable File Sharing window appears.

  5. Choose Just enable file sharing.

  6. Click the OK button.

  7. Put a check in the Share this File/Folder on the network box.

  8. Type a name for your file or folder in the Shared Name box.

  9. Click the OK button.
    A picture of a hand appears under the file or folder indicating that it is shared.
