How do I configure my Dell™ PowerConnect™ 3248, 5212, and/or 5224 switch to utilize IGMP? - Technical Tip - 133923

Configuring the Dell™ PowerConnect™ 3248, 5212, and/or 5224 to utilize IGMP.

To configure PowerConnect switches for multicasting, use a multicast router with IGMP snooping enabled on the switch or configure the switch as an IGMP Querier if a multicast router is not available.

Configuring the PowerConnect Switch for IGMP Snooping

If a router is configured to handle the multicast groups, enable IGMP snooping on the PowerConnect switch.

To enable IGMP snooping using the Web interface, check the Enabled box for the IGMP Status option as shown in Figure 1.

NOTE: After checking the box, apply the changes and save the configuration to the NVRAM.

To enable IGMP snooping using the command-line interface, use the ip igmp snooping command as shown in Figure 2:

NOTE: After making the changes to the running-configuration, use the copy running-config startup-config command to save the changes to the NVRAM.

Configuring the PowerConnect Switch as an IGMP Querier

If a dynamic multicast group assignment is required, but no multicast router is installed, configure the switch to act as an IGMP Querier.

To enable the switch as an IGMP Querier using the Web interface, check the Enabled box for both the IGMP status and Act as IGMP Querier options as shown in Figure 3.

Various options for IGMP Query can also be modified from this page.

NOTE: After checking the box, apply the changes and save the configuration to the NVRAM.

To enable the switch as an IGMP Querier using the command-line interface, use the commands ip igmp snooping and ip igmp snooping querier as shown in Figure 4.

Various options for IGMP Query can be modified from the same command tree.

NOTE: After making the changes to the running-configuration, use the copy running-config startup-config command to save the changes to the NVRAM.
