How to Install and Use the Dell Crash Analysis Tool


When to use the Crash Analysis Tool


If you have attempted other troubleshooting methods and feel you need to reinstall your operating system due to blue screen errors or system crashes, try using the Crash Analysis Tool first.


Download and Install the Crash Analysis Tool


Download the Crash Analysis Tool

  1. Click Dell Crash Analysis Tool to download the necessary files.
    By downloading software from the Dell Web site, you accept the terms of the Dell Software License Agreement.

  2. Click Save to save the file to a location on the computer and display the Save As window.

  3. Specify a location to which you want to save the file. For example, if you want to save the file to the desktop, click Desktop. Then, click Save. Make sure that you note the file name and where you saved the file.


Install the Crash Analysis Tool

  1. Locate the file that you saved to the computer, and then double-click the file to display the Open File - Security Warning window.

  2. Click Run to start the installation program for the Crash Analysis Tool.

  3. In the Application: Dell Crash Analysis Tool Application window that appears, click Continue.

  4. Note the path that appears in the Select the folder where you want to unzip the files to box, and then click OK.

  5. When you are prompted to create the folder in which to store the extracted files, click Yes to extract the files to the folder.

  6. When the message All files were successfully unzipped appears, click OK.

  7. When the Crash Analysis Tool - InstallShield Wizard window appears, click Next.

  8. On the Ready to Install the Program page of the wizard, click Install to install the Crash Analysis Tool.

  9. When the installation is complete, click Finish on the InstallShield Wizard Completed page of the wizard to install the Crash Analysis Tool on the computer.



Run the Crash Analysis Tool


To run the Crash Analysis Tool:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Dell Accessories, and then click Crash Analysis Tool.
  2. In the Crash Analysis Tool window, under Welcome to the Crash Analysis Tool, click Run.

The Crash Analysis Tool scans the computer to detect drivers that may be causing issues on the computer. When the scan is complete, the results are displayed in the Crash Analysis Tool Scan Results list in the Crash Analysis Tool window.
As part of the crash analysis process, the Crash Analysis Tool automatically rolls back drivers that it detects. This means that the Crash Analysis Tool replaces a driver by using a previously installed version of the driver.


View the Scan Results

After you run the Crash Analysis Tool, view the scan results. Use the information in the scan results to help determine the drivers that you must update to help resolve the issue:
  1. View the driver or the drivers that appear in the Crash Analysis Tool Scan Results list (Figure 1).

  2. Use the following information in the Crash Analysis Tool Scan Results list to determine the driver or program that may be causing the issue:
    • The Driver column. The Driver column lists the file name of the driver.
    • The Manufacturer column. The Manufacturer column lists the manufacturer of the driver.
      Note:

      If you need more information to help you identify a driver or a program that is used together with Dell hardware, visit the Dell Support Web site to search for the information that you need.
      If the driver or the program is not shipped by Dell, search the Internet to help determine the manufacturer of the driver or the program.
  3. After you determine the driver or the drivers that are causing the error, use one or both of the following methods, depending on the situation.
    • For drivers that are used together with Dell hardware, visit the following Web sites to determine whether updates are available:
