What Is the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)?

The Microsoft® Windows Vista® Recovery Environment (WinRE) helps troubleshoot issues when you cannot boot into Windows Vista. Even if Windows Vista does not load, you can still access the WinRE. The WinRE provides the following troubleshooting and recovery tools using the System Recovery Options menu:
  • Startup Repair - automatically fixes problems that prevent Windows from starting
  • System Restore - restores Windows to an earlier point in time
  • CompletePC Restore - restores your computer from a CompletePC Backup image (only available in Windows Vista Business and Ultimate editions)
  • Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool - checks your computer for memory hardware errors
  • Command Prompt - opens a command prompt window
  • Dell Factory Image Restore - Restores the computer to the original Dell-factory image. This option appears on Dell computers that were originally preinstalled with Windows Vista. This does not include computers purchased through the Express Upgrade promotion or computers that were upgraded to Windows Vista from another version of Windows.
