Note: This article is only relevant to people using Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 who have need to change the SATA mode without having to reinstall the Operating System (OS) on each occasion. Previous Windows Editions would require Windows Registry changes, which this guide will not go into.

If you change the SATA mode without reinstalling the OS you will be subject to Windows Blue Screen errors.

There are a number of reasons why you would want to change the SATA mode, such as to disable a RAID build or to tweak the performance of your SSD (Solid State Drive).

Resolution Steps

Note: Best practice recommends that before you do any work on your OS, you complete a full backup in case of any problems.

Run through these steps :

  1. You need to open a Command Prompt and give it Administrative Rights.

Windows 8 and 8.1

  1. You can use the keyboard shortcut by pressing on the <Win + X> keys to open a Power Users Menu.

  2. Right click or press and hold on the Command Prompt link to select Open as Administrator from the sub-menu that appears.

Windows 10

  1. You can use the keyboard shortcut by pressing on the Windows logo key to open the Start Menu.

  2. Type CMD and a list of options appears.

  3. Right click or press and hold on the Command Prompt link to select Open as Administrator from the sub-menu that appears.

  1. Run the following command :

    bcdedit /set { current } safeboot minimal
  2. Restart the system and enter the BIOS screens.

    1. Tap rapidly on the F2 key when the system is at the Dell Splash Screen during startup.

    2. Alternatively tap rapidly on the F12 key and choose the BIOS from the menu that appears.

  3. Select the required SATA mode, save your changes and restart the PC.

  4. Windows will start up in SAFE Mode.

  5. Open the Command Prompt as an Administrator again.

  6. Run the following command :

    bcdedit /deletevalue { current } safeboot
  7. Restart Windows again.

Note: At this point it is advised that you uninstall the Intel RST Driver from your system and install the latest revision from out support site. Please remember to enter your service tag, express service code or select your system type and then choose your Operating System to make sure you have the most recent revision for your particular PC.
