What do I do if my Dell™ PowerVault™ 120T Autoloader does not appear in the Devices tab in Backup Exec 8.x? - Technical Tip - 161916

What do I do if my Dell™ PowerVault™ 120T Autoloader does not appear in the Devices tab in Backup Exec 8.x?

Ensure that the Autoloader and the drive are being seen in the Device Manager for Windows 2000, or in SCSI Adapters in the Control Panel for Windows NT 4.0. If both the Adic FasStor and the DLT drive are seen correctly, then complete the following steps to get the autoloader recognized.

  1. For Windows 2000: click the Start button, point to Administrative Tools, and click Services.
For Windows NT 4.0: click the Start button, point to Settings, click Control Panel and double-click Services.
  2. Stop all of the Backup Exec services, and exit from the Services window.
  3. Click the Start button, point to Run, in the Open box, type: regedt32.
  4. Navigate to the following registry key:
    HKEY_Local_Machine
    On Local Machine
    System
    CurrentControlSet
    Control
    SCSIChanger

    Highlight SCSIChanger and press <Delete>.

Navigate to the following registry key:
    HKEY_Local_Machine
    On Local Machine
    System
    CurrentControlSet
    Services
    SCSIChanger

    Highlight SCSIChanger and press <Delete>.
  5. Close the Registry Editor.
  6. Shut down the server and the autoloader.
  7. Boot the loader, letting it fully initialize.
  8. Boot the server.
  9. Run the installation for Backup Exec either through Add/Remove Programs or the Setup.exe file on the Backup Exec CD.
  10. On the Components to install screen, select only Tape Device Drivers and Enable Autoloader support.
  11. Complete the installation.
  12. Reboot the server normally.

What do I do if my Dell™ PowerVault™ 120T Autoloader does not appear in the Devices tab in Backup Exec 8.x?

If the values in the following registry keys does not match the device information seen by the SCSI controller card, then Backup Exec 8.x will not use the autoloader device:

HKEY_Local_Machine
On Local Machine
System
CurrentControlSet
Control
SCSIChanger

HKEY_Local_Machine
On Local Machine
System
CurrentControlSet
Services
SCSIChanger

Un-installing and re-installing the backup software will not solve the issue. During the un-install process, BackupExec does not remove the registry keys mentioned above. During the re-install process, if the keys are detected, they are not re-written. If the keys do not match, then BackupExec will assume there is a hardware error, and will not display the device under the Devices tab.
