The following guides will provide a visual guide to each of the different types of port and connector you will find on any computer currently shipping or having shipped in the last 10 years. They will also show a guide to the port and connector colour code convention.

Visual Guides to the Various Ports and Connectors

Ports and Connectors where the information is going into the device.

These Ports and Connectors are mostly found on older systems now as they were of limited use, being dedicated to one purpose per Port.

Colour Code Port Connector Name
Green PS2/Mouse
Purple PS2/Keyboard
Gold Game Port/Midi
Ports and Connectors where the information is coming out of the device.

These are most commonly the Audio and Video Ports and Connectors. I've split the Video Ports and Connectors into their own section below.

Colour Code Port Connector Name
Pink Analog microphone audio input mono or stereo
Light blue Analog line level audio input
Lime Green Analog line level audio output for the main stereo signal front speakers or headphones
Black Analog line level audio output for the surround speakers rear speakers
Silver Analog line level audio output side speakers
Orange Analog line level output centre speaker / subwoofer
None Mono Universal Audio Jack (UAJ) TS - Mono sound from headphones
None Stereo Universal Audio Jack (UAJ) TRS - Stereo sound from headphones
None Stereo and Mic Universal Audio Jack (UAJ) TRRS - Stereo sound and Microphone
Ports and Connectors where the information is going in both directions.
Note: Dell has a feature on it's systems called PowerShare. You can identify this by the symbol underneath the port. (i.e. the USB symbol followed by a lighting bolt.) You can find out more about this feature on the link below:
