Steps to open the Supermicro SC742 case

Caution:
Before performing any of the procedures in this section, read and follow the safety instructions in Dell Knowledge Base Article: "Precautionary Measures for Personal Safety" Article ID: 339031.

Perform the steps to open the Supermicro SC742 case.

The Supermicro SC742 case is a special case designed to accommodate Extended ATX motherboards (12" x 13.05" or 304.8mm x 331.5mm), which are too large for the Alienware full tower or Alienware Classic cases.

This case can be serviced through the left side panel. The right side panel is not removable.

To make sure if this article applies to your computer, identify the Alienware case. For more information, refer to Dell Knowledge base article "How to Identify the Alienware Case or Mobile System?" Article ID: 349346.

Steps to remove the panel.

  1. Turn off the computer.

  2. Unplug the AC power cord.

  3. Stand in front of the computer, and locate the release tab on the left side panel (Figure 1).

    Note:
It is possible to open the case while it is in the vertical position; however, it is recommended turning the computer on its right side before trying to open the latch.

  4. Using the thumb, push down the release tab on the left side panel, and hold it pressed while pushing the cover toward the rear of the chassis. It requires considerable effort to push the button and slide the cover. It should stop after moving about ½ inch (Figure 2).

  5. Lift the side panel just a couple of inches above the computer, but do not take it away yet.

  6. The computer may be equipped with a Kool-Max fan, located on the left side panel. Unplug the power connector before taking the panel away. The wire has enough slack to disconnect it safely. After unplugging the fan’s power connector, the panel can be taken away.

  7. Place the left side panel in a safe location. Do not place it on a hard or coarse surface as the finish may be damaged (Figure 3).

Steps to install the panel.

  1. Turn off the computer.

  2. Unplug the AC power cord.

  3. It is possible to install the case while it is in the vertical position; however, it is recommended to turn the computer on its right side. Place the panel next to the computer’s case, but do not lay it on top of the case yet.

  4. Connect the KoolMax fan (The fan located in the side panel, if present) to an unused power supply output.

  5. Place the left side panel on the computer, with the panel’s latch facing the front of the case, leaving a ½ inch gap at the front edge. The panel should sit properly on the case’s opening.

  6. Slide the panel toward the front of the case until a slight clicking sound is heard. This will make sure that the latch is fully engaged.
