This article provides information on "Imaging Recommendations for the Dell Venue 11 Pro 7130/7139".
The purpose of this document is to provide details for imaging Dell Venue 11 Pro 7130/7139 systems with the properly supported Microsoft Operating System and required drivers and applications.
Drivers and applications must be installed on Venue 11 Pro 7130/7139 in a prescribed order to ensure optimal functionality and performance. Dell provides drivers and applications that are not included in Microsoft Operating Systems. These drivers are required to enable the features of the Dell Venue 11 Pro 7130/7139 systems. The needed drivers and their supporting applications can be retrieved from Dell.com/support.
Supported Operating Systems
The following Microsoft operating systems have been validated for use with Dell Venue 11 Pro 7130/7139:

There are two basic methods to install an OS image on Venue 11 Pro 7130/7139.
The Dell Venue 11 Pro will only boot UEFI mode. The USB flash drive used to install the OS must be configured to boot UEFI.
First, create a UEFI bootable USB flash drive that can boot and run the Windows 8.1 OS installer.
Run these steps from any local user workstation/system connected to the internet.
To install the OS with a UEFI bootable USB flash drive from the dock:
With the system connected to the dock, ensure that a USB mouse and a USB keyboard are connected to the Dock’s USB ports. Until the chipset drivers are loaded, the touchscreen will not function. Until the OS is installed and the chipset drivers are in place, all input when installing the OS will need to come from the attached USB mouse and keyboard.

To install the OS with the bootable flash drive without the dock:
The installation method for installing off the dock is the same as the above outlined procedure with the exception of the use of a powered USB hub for connection of the USB mouse, USB keyboard and USB flash drive in place of the docking unit. A powered hub is recommended as the Venue 11 Pro’s USB port can only provide 500mA of usable current (Figure 2).

PXE Boot Setup
Venue 11 Pro 7130/7139 both support PXE network booting for connection to automated install and deployment servers. It is recommended to use the network capabilities of the docking unit to provide PXE boot and network support for the system. The PXE boot image provided by the PXE server must be a Winpe boot.wim that can boot in UEFI mode. In order for WinPe to connect to the network image server after startup, the boot wim image file must have the drivers installed for the Venue 11 Pro system’s network device. The docking unit will provide power for the system. 7130/7139 can boot both standard PXE DOS (initrd) and UEFI images.
The docking unit, while recommended for PXE boot and image install, is not required to install the OS, device drivers and apps through SCCM or other image deployment services. A USB mouse and keyboard and an external USB to Ethernet adapter can be connected to a powered USB hub in place of the docking unit (Figure 2).
Built into the BIOS, the Venue 11 Pro 7130/7139 have PXE code specifically for the docking unit’s internal USB to Ethernet adapter. In order to use an external USB to Ethernet adapter to PXE boot, the adapter must be built around the ASIX AX88772 Ethernet IC (Integrated Circuit). Both AX88772B and AX88772C versions are supported.
The below table outlines the USB to Ethernet devices and boot modes that are currently supported. (See Figure 3.)

The ASIX AX88772 internal to the dock and the USB adapters is only capable of 10/100Mbit Ethernet speeds. Support for Gigabit Ethernet will be added early 2014 through the use of a USB3.0 to RJ-45 Ethernet adapter.
Booting the system to PXE
To PXE boot the system, make the necessary USB and network connections then power up the system. As soon as the Dell splash screen is displayed, press the F12 key to bring up the one-time boot selection menu.
Device Drivers / Apps
Dell provides pre-packaged driver and app Cab files for OS deployment through SCCM or other deployment services. The Cab files can be downloaded from the Dell Support Site. The Cab package file can also be downloaded from the Dell Community Forum.
SCCM/Deployment Step Sequence
SCCM Partition Setup
While not required for Venue 11 Pro 7130/7139, it is recommended to create a Partition Disk 0 – BIOS partition to provide support for future models that can boot with legacy BIOS mode. For the legacy partitions _SMSTSBootUEFI should be set to "not equals" true.
If desired the BIOS legacy step can be skipped. Partition Disk 0-UEFI partition must be created. Here _SMSTSBootUEFI must be set to "equals" true in order for the partition to properly UEFI boot.
SCCM Driver Install Step Sequence
Dell recommends installing the Venue 11 Pro 7130/7139 system’s device drivers and supporting applications in the install order outlined below in section 6.
