Reinstalling Dell™ DVD-to-Go Software, DVD-ROM, and Margi MPEG-2 Card - Technical Tip - 153818


Install the Dell DVD-to-Go Software Driver

To completely uninstall the DVD-to-Go Software and then reinstall it, perform the steps in each of the following sections:

Uninstall the Existing DVD-to-Go software

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. In the Control Panel window, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

  3. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties window, locate Dell Computer DVD-to-Go in the list of installed software and click it.

  4. Click the Add/Remove button.

  5. Click Yes to confirm that you wish to uninstall the software.

  6. Click Yes that you wish to delete the files.

  7. The Uninstall Shield will remove the Dell DVD-to-Go software.

Delete the Remaining Application Files

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.

  2. In the Exploring window, on the top menu bar, click View and then click Folder Options.

  3. In the Folder Options window, click the View tab.

  4. Click Show all files.

    If the box next to Hide file extensions for known file types is checked, click to uncheck it.

  5. Click Apply and then click OK.

    In the Folders window pane, if there is a plus (+) sign next to the (C:) drive, click the plus (+) sign.

  6. If there is a plus (+) sign next to the Windows folder, click the plus (+) sign.

  7. Click the Inf folder.

  8. Right-click each file in the Inf folder with a .BIN extension and click Delete from the pop-up menu to delete the file. Click Yes each time to confirm that you wish to delete the file.

  9. Click the Other folder.

  10. If the either of the files MARGI Systems, Inc.dvdtogo.INF or DELLdvdtogo.INF is listed in the Other folder, right-click the file and then click Delete from the pop-up menu. Click YES to confirm that you wish to delete the file

Remove the Registry Entries

You may be able to skip this section and proceed to the reinstallation. If you are unfamiliar with the process of editing the registry, first attempt to reinstall the DVD software without editing the registry. If that fails, then repeat the steps from the prior sections and proceed to edit the registry.

Incorrect use of the registry editor and editing the registry files can cause serious problems that may require a complete reinstall of your operating system. Dell assumes no responsibility, expressed or implied, regarding the consequences of any action taken as a result of the information provided herein.

Click Start, click Run, and then type Regedit in the Open box. Click OK.

  1. In the Registry Editor window, click the plus (+) sign next to each of the following keys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    Enum


  2. Right-click the PCMCIA folder and click Delete from the pop-up menu.
    Click YES to confirm the key deletion.

  3. Click the plus (+) sign next to each of the following keys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    Enum
    SCSI

  4. If you have a Torisan DVD-ROM, right-click the TORISAN_CD-ROM_CDR_U200_1 folder and click Delete from the pop-up menu.

    If you have a Matshita DVD-ROM, right click the Matshita_CD-ROM_CDR_U200_1 folder and click Delete from the pop-up menu.

  5. Click Yes to confirm the key deletion.

  6. Click the plus (+) sign next to each of the following keys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    Software

  7. Right-click the Margi_Systems folder and click Delete from the pop-up menu.
    Click Yes to confirm the key deletion.

  8. Click the plus (+) sign next to each of the following keys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    System
    CurrentControlSet
    Services
    Class
    MEDIA

  9. Click each folder that begins with 000 and if it contains an entry for DELL-DVD_Player or MargiPNP.vxd, then right-click the folder and click Delete from the pop-up menu.
    Click YES to confirm the key deletion.

  10. Click the plus (+) sign next to each of the following keys:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    Software
    Microsoft
    Windows
    CurrentVersion
    Explorer
    MenuOrder
    StartMenu
    &Programs

  11. Right-click the DellDVDPlayer folder and click Delete from the pop-up menu.
    Click YES to confirm the key deletion.

  12. Close the Registry Editor.

  13. Click Start, click Shut Down, click Shut Down, and then click OK.

Install the DVD-ROM

  1. To begin the process, insert the DVD drive in the computer''s options bay.

  2. Turn the computer on and let it boot into Windows.

  3. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  4. In the Control Panel window, double-click the System icon.


  5. In the System Properties window, Click the Device Manager tab.

  6. Click the plus (+) next to the CDROM category.
    You should see a listing for the DVD-ROM that you connected to the system.

Install the DVD-to-Go software

  1. Insert your Dell DVD-to-Go 2.x software CD in the DVD drive.

  2. Click the Start button, click Run, and then type x:\setup, where x is the letter of your DVD drive in the Open box. Click OK.

  3. In the Welcome window, click Next.


  4. In the prompt for the installation path, click Next. Dell does not recommend that you change this path.

  5. In the Region Code Selection - Information window, click Next.

  6. In the Region Code Selection window, click to select the Region option. Due to legal restrictions, the region code for any DVD playback can only be changed 5 times, so it is very important to set it correctly the first time.

  7. Click Next.
    A window appears that details the countries that belong to the Region you selected.

  8. Verify that you selected the appropriate Region and then click Next. If you must change your selection, click Back.
    The program files will be copied to your hard drive.


  9. In the Information window, click OK.

Install the Dell Margi MPEG-2 PCMCIA Card

It is very important that you install the Margi card in the correct slot for your system type. For the Inspiron 3000, Inspiron 3200, Inspiron 3500, Latitude CPt, and Latitude CPi-R; you must install the Margi card in the bottom slot. For the Latitude CP, Latitude CPi, and CPiA; you must install the Margi card in the top slot.

  1. Once the system has completed the boot process, insert the Dell Margi MPEG-2 PCMCIA card in the correct PCMCIA socket, the Update Device Driver Wizard appears.

  2. To begin the installation of the Dell Margi MPEG-2 PCMCIA Card, click Next. The Update Device Driver Wizard appears. The wizard will locate the DELL-DVD_Player driver.

  3. To start the install, click Finish, the error message The file MargiPNP.vxd on (Unknown) could not be found appears.

  4. Insert the Dell DVD-to-Go CD into the DVD drive.

  5. In the Copy Files from window, type x:\, where x is the drive letter of your DVD drive.

  6. Click OK to copy the files.
    The files will be copied to the hard drive and then you should hear the PCMCIA double tone.

The hardware should now be successfully setup.

The Installation Files and the User Interface

To determine the driver version of the Dell or Margi DVD-to-Go software that you have installed, perform the following steps:

  1. Click the blue Margi logo in the lower right corner of the player interface. (Figure 2)
    The About DVD-to-Go window should appear.

  2. The driver version will appear in the About DVD-to-Go window.

To completely uninstall the DVD-to-Go Software and then reinstall it, perform the steps in each of the following sections:

Uninstall the Existing DVD-to-Go software

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. In the Control Panel window, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

  3. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties window, locate Dell Computer DVD-to-Go in the list of installed software and click it. Click the Add/Remove.



Removing and Reinstalling the DVD-ROM Drive, Margi MPEG-2 PCMCIA Card, and Dell DVD-to-Go DVD Player Software

Before you start this procedure, you need the following items:

  • Dell DVD Drive
  • Dell Margi MPEG-2 DVD Decoder PCMCIA Card
  • Dell DVD-to-Go Software CD

When you install the Margi MPEG-2 DVD Decoder PCMCIA Card, you must install it to a specific socket, depending on your system type:

  • For the Inspiron™ 3000, Inspiron 3200, Inspiron 3500, Latitude CPt, Latitude CPx, and Latitude CPi-R, you must install the Margi card in the bottom slot.
  • For the Latitude™ CP, Latitude CPi, CPiA, and CS, you must install the Margi card in the top slot.
