How do I configure ASM?

In order to configure ASM we will be using the provided init script that comes with the oracleasm-support package. We can perform this action a number of ways but our recommendation is to use the init script wrapper utility known as "service" and run the following command as root:

service oracleasm configure
NOTE: This step needs to be run on all nodes needing access to the ASM Disks.

This will configure the boot time parameters of the Oracle ASM library and will produce a step by step text interface configuration method that appears similar to:

Now that the ASM Library is configured we will want to create ASM disks that can be managed and used for our Oracle DB installation. In order to create a disk we will run the following command as root:

service oracleasm createdisk DISKNAME /dev/mapper/diskpartition
NOTE: The fields DISKNAME and /dev/mapper/diskpartition should be substituted with the appropriate names for your environment respectively.

Once we have created the ASM disks that we need we can verify that the ASM library is aware of the disks we assume it is by running the following command as root. The output of this command should list every instance of DISKNAME from the previous command(s):

service oracleasm listdisks

In the event an ASM disk needs to be deleted you can run the following command to do so:

service oracleasm deletedisk DISKNAME
NOTE: The field DISKNAME should be substituted with the appropriate name for your environment.
NOTE: In order to discover the Oracle ASM disks on other nodes in the cluster you will need to run the following command on those nodes: service oracleasm scandisks
