Problem:

How do I create volumes on my Compellent array for Oracle RAC?

Solution:

Volumes are created from the Compellent Storage Center by following the steps documented under the Section "Creating Volumes" in the Chapter 4 "Volumes" of the Dell Compellent Storage Center 5.4 System Manager User Guide.

The following table shows a sample volume configuration for an Oracle 11g R2 RAC database.
Number of Volumes Minimum Size Number of Partitions Used For Operating System Mapping
Five 1 GB One on each volume Grid Infrastructure ASM disk group for Grid Infrastructure OCR and Voting Disk
N Total size larger than the size of database One on each volume Data ASM disk group for database area
N x 2 Total size is twice the size of database if Flash Recovery Area stores full database backups One on each volume Flash Recovery Area ASM disk group for flash recovery area
Four (Optional) 10 GB One Shared Oracle Home ASM disk group for shared Oracle Home
Table 1: Oracle 11g R2 RAC database

For example, the following volumes are created in Compellent for an Oracle 11g R2 RAC database.
Volume Name Size Number of Partitions Purposes ASM disk group mapping
WC_R815_cluster_grid1 1 GB 1 Grid Infrastructure OCR and Voting Disk OCRVOTDSK
WC_R815_cluster_grid2 1 GB 1
WC_R815_cluster_grid3 1 GB 1
WC_R815_cluster_grid4 1 GB 1
WC_R815_cluster_grid5 1 GB 1
WC_R815_cluster_data1 100 GB 1 Database Area DATABASEDG
WC_R815_cluster_data2 100 GB 1
WC_R815_cluster_data3 100 GB 1
WC_R815_cluster_data4 100 GB 1
WC_R815_cluster_fra1 100 GB 1 Flash Recovery Area FLASHBACKDG
WC_R815_cluster_fra2 100 GB 1
WC_R815_cluster_fra3 100 GB 1
WC_R815_cluster_fra4 100 GB 1
WC_R815_cluster_fra5 100 GB 1
WC_R815_cluster_fra6 100 GB 1
WC_R815_cluster_fra7 100 GB 1
WC_R815_cluster_fra8 100 GB 1
WC_R815_cluster_orahome1 10 GB 1 Shared Oracle Home ORAHOME
WC_R815_cluster_orahome2 10 GB 1
WC_R815_cluster_orahome3 10 GB 1
WC_R815_cluster_orahome4 10 GB 1

This sample volume configuration follows Oracle’s best practice recommendations on ASM deployment. As documented in ASM Overview and Technical Best Practices White Paper, Oracle recommends the following deployment guidance to increase performance and / or availability:
  • Use diskgroups with similarly sized and performing disks. A diskgroup containing large number of disks provides a wide distribution of data extents, thus allowing greater concurrency for I/O and reduces the occurrences of hotspots.
  • Use diskgroups with four or more disks.
