How do I convert Admin Managed Database to Policy Managed Database in Oracle 11g R2?

Solution:

This article will show example steps required to convert a traditional database to a policy managed database.

Step 1: Verify the current configuration of the database

As the grid user,

[grid@asmhost bin]$ $GRID_HOME/bin/srvctl config database -d asmdb

Database unique name: asmdb

Database name: asmdb

Oracle home: /opt/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1

Oracle user: oracle

Spfile: +DATA/asmdb/spfileasmdb.ora

Domain:

Start options: open

Stop options: immediate

Database role: PRIMARY

Management policy: AUTOMATIC

Server pools: asmdb

Database instances: asmdb1

Disk Groups: DATA

Services: Database is administrator managed

The above shows that the database is an administrator managed database.

Step 2 : Create a server pool for the policy managed database.

$GRID_HOME/bin/srvctl add serverpool -g asmpool -l 2 -u 2

-l refers to Minimum size of the server pool

-u refers to Maximum suze if the server pool

Verify the status of the server pool

[grid@asmhost bin]$ $GRID_HOME/bin/srvctl status srvpool

Server pool name: Free

Active servers count: 0

Server pool name: Generic

Active servers count: 1

Server pool name: asmpool

Active servers count: 0

The above created asmpool is listed in the serverpool list

Step 3: Modify the admin database to the new server pool as shown below

[grid@asmhost bin]$ $GRID_HOME/bin/srvctl modify database -d asmdb -g asmpool

Step 4: Verify the status of the database to confirm the conversion to a policy managed database

[grid@asmhost bin]$ $GRID_HOME/bin/srvctl config database -d asmdb

Database unique name: asmdb

Database name: asmdb

Oracle home: /opt/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1

Oracle user: oracle

Spfile: +DATA/asmdb/spfileasmdb.ora

Domain:

Start options: open

Stop options: immediate

Database role: PRIMARY

Management policy: AUTOMATIC

Server pools: asmpool

Database instances:

Disk Groups: DATA

Services:

Database is policy managed

After completing the conversion, the above services status shows that the database is a policy managed database.
