Dell launches the Mellanox SB7800 and SB7890 Switch-IB 2 EDR 100Gb/s InfiniBand Smart Switches

Dell is pleased to announce the availability of the Mellanox SB7800 and SB7890 InfiniBand Enhanced Data Rate (EDR) InfiniBand Smart Switch systems as part of our portfolio of HPC solutions ( ). Together, Mellanox and Dell have worked together to deliver effective solutions to the HPC market and share many of the leading HPC InfiniBand deployments. For customers who need high bandwidth, low latency, simplified management including quality of service, CPU offloading and flexible scalability, we are excited to offer this new technology choice to our customers. By providing these InfiniBand-2 switches to our customers, Dell is able to provide another option to customers seeking a complete cluster solution, including compute, networking, storage, client systems, software, and services.

The Mellanox SB7800 family of InfiniBand top-of-rack switches delivers high performance, port density, and a complete fabric management solution that enables compute clusters and converged data centers to operate at any scale while reducing operational costs and infrastructure complexity. The EDR switches support 100Gb/s speeds and offer 36 non-blocking ports. These switches allow IT managers to build the most cost-effective and scalable switch fabrics ranging from small clusters to those with hundreds of nodes, and can carry converged traffic with the combination of assured bandwidth and granular quality of service, ensuring the highest productivity.

With increased signaling rates of up to 25Gb/s per lane and Mellanox’s new SHArP (Scalable Hierarchical Aggregation Protocol) technology that optimizes network traffic, performance of collective operations is improved by processing the data as it traverses the network, thus eliminating the need to send data multiple times between endpoints. This decreases the amount of data traversing the network and can free CPU compute resources. These advances make for a switch that is an excellent choice for top-of-rack leaf connectivity or for building small to extremely large-sized clusters.
