Fans and Cooling
The PowerEdge VRTX chassis comes with six internal fans, located inside the chassis, and four blowers, located on the back of the chassis. The internal fans provide cooling for the storage devices, internal PERC controller and installed PCIe adapters. The blower fans provide cooling to the server modules. By default the PowerEdge VRTX chassis is designed to provide the needed cooling to all subsystems while maintaining low acoustic sound levels. For highly configured server systems and/or high power draw PCIe devices, the PowerEdge VRTX chassis provides enhanced cooling capabilities to these areas when the specific features are enabled. The sections below highlight the user enabled features for these additional cooling options.
Fan Offset Feature
The Fan Offset feature can be used to provide additional cooling to the chassis installed hard drives, shared PERC device and the PCIe slots to cover any high power/performance needs for these devices. User can select a low, medium or high fan offset value, which increases default fan speeds by 20%, 50% or 100% respectively. When this feature is enabled, the overall chassis power consumption increases along with chassis acoustic levels. When this feature is disabled, the fan speeds will be reduced to the default speeds required for adequate system cooling, lowering overall chassis power consumption and acoustic levels.
Enhanced Cooling Mode Feature
For highly configured server systems, default chassis cooling will provide the needed cooling for the system while maintaining minimal acoustic levels. The Enhanced Cooling Mode feature allows you to enable increased blower speeds that can provide enhanced cooling to systems under heavy workloads. This, in turn, can result in better server performance while also increasing overall chassis power consumption and acoustic levels.
