Oracle Database Tested and Validated with VMware

Dell EMC’s latest Oracle Database Tested and Validated (T&V) program brings in a key update for our customers, wherein, VMware as a virtualized platform is now added to our Oracle database’s validated compatibility matrix. This release also adds the validation of Dell EMC’s 13th generation servers running with Intel’s latest Broadwell processors. A summary of the key hardware and software components that are validated with VMware platform in this release is provided in Table 1

Details of all the T&V components can be found here - compatibility matrix for Oracle Database on VMware. The compatibility matrix provides customers the flexibility to mix and match the hardware, and helps to choose the components that best fit their requirements and environment. A sample architecture that can be built using the pre-validated compatibility matrix is provided below in Figure 1

Dell EMC’s T&V program ensures that the end-to-end Oracle database stack is put through rigorous functionality, scalability, and reliability tests using fault injection, high availability (HA), and load inducing tests. The single instance and the Real Application Clusters (RAC) database is setup using Dell and Oracle’s recommended settings, best practices, and deployment automation tools that can be found here.

A virtualized platform like VMware can help customers to reduce their total cost of ownership (TCO) by consolidating multiple of their databases spread across separate legacy physical servers on to lesser and much more powerful, newer virtualized servers. VMware also has the added advantage wherein it can provide the option to implement database HA using VMware’s vMotion feature which otherwise could be fairly expensive when implemented using the high cost Oracle Database’s RAC feature. Thus to help our customers to save cost and provide greater flexibility, with this release, we tested and validated database HA with both VMware’s vMotion feature as well as Oracle Database’s Real Application Clusters (RAC) feature. This ensured that the validated components not only provide a highly available and a robust stack from a hardware perspective but also from a software perspective. The validated stack was tested for both Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) and Online Transaction Analytical Processing (OLAP) workloads to support most commonly found workload types in customer’s database environment.

Thus with this latest release of validated stack, customers who are currently running Oracle database on Dell hardware and in need of a refresh to the latest platform or would like to migrate from legacy system to newer Intel x86 virtualized Linux hardware can now do so with ease, confidence, and with potentially greater savings.
