This article walks you through the process of replacing the keyboard on your Dell Latitude E6420. - During installation or removal of any hardware, always ensure that all data is backed up properly.
- Disconnect any telephone, network, video, or USB cables from the computer.
- If the laptop is being used in a docking station, undock the system.
- Disconnect the AC adapter from the system.
- Remove the battery from the system.
- Hold the power button in for 5 seconds to drain any residual power from the system.

Removing and Installing your Keyboard
- Remove the keyboard trim by gently lifting the edges using the plastic scribe tool.
- Remove the two securing screws directly below the battery on the bottom of the system.
- Remove the four screws at the bottom of the keyboard above the touchpad.
- Gently flip the keyboard over.
- Lift the cable securing latch up with the plastic scribe tool.
- Gently disconnect the cable and remove the keyboard from the system.
Installing your keyboard
- Connect the keyboard cable.
- Press the cable securing clip down so that it is clipped into place.
- Flip the keyboard upright, and slide it downwards into place.
- Replace the four screws at the bottom of the keyboard.
- Replace the keyboard trim and press down until it snaps into place.
- Replace the two securing screws on the bottom of the system.
- You can now reinstall the battery and reconnect the AC adapter.
