A driver is a little piece of software that allows your PC to talk to a hardware device.

What is a driver?

A driver is a small but essential piece of software that is written for a specific operating system like Windows 10. The operating system uses the driver to communicate with a hardware device like a printer. When you ask your PC to do an action like print a page, your PC asks the printer via the driver.
Without drivers, the devices that you connect to your PC would not work properly. Dell develops drivers so that the operating system on your PC can work with your Dell devices and applications.

Why do I want to update my drivers?

Dell releases updated drivers frequently to ensure that your PC the latest security patches, fixes, and functionality available. When you update your drivers, you are taking a preventative measure to protect your PC and make sure your hardware and devices work properly.

What is the easiest way to update drivers?

You can have Dell automatically check for and/or download and install the latest updates by using the “Detect Drivers” feature on the “Drivers and downloads” tab of your product’s support page. All newer Dell PCs come with a secure Dell support application called Dell System Detect that enables driver updates. When you run the “Detect Drivers” scan, you may be prompted to install or update Dell System Detect before the scan continues.
This is a great way to make sure all your hardware, and devices work properly. When Dell updates drivers for you, there is no need to worry about finding the right version number or the appropriate installation sequence. We take care of it for you.

How do I download and update a driver myself?

It is best to let Dell detect driver updates automatically. But if would like to update a driver yourself, you can use the keyword search box and filters on the “Drivers and downloads” tab of your product’s support page to find the desired driver.

Why am I not seeing all the drivers for my PC?

If you have chosen to search for an individual driver rather than having Dell automatically update them, you need to check which filters you have selected. There may be some drivers or applications that are available for your product model but do not match your PC’s original configuration. If you are searching by a Service Tag, you will only see drivers for the components that were included when you bought your system. To see all drivers for your product model, deselect the “Show drivers for Service Tag” checkbox.

Where do I find drivers for my Dell printer and other Dell connected devices?

Dell Printers and accessories have their own product support page where you find available drivers. If you are on your PC or tablet’s product support page, you can select the “Change product” link at the top of the page to select your Dell printer or accessory.
If a keyboard and mouse came bundled with your PC, you may also find the drivers using the keyword search or category filter on the “Drivers and downloads” tab of your PC’s product support page.
For devices that were not made by Dell, you need to look for drivers on the manufacturer’s website.

What happens if a device stops working after an update?

In rare cases, a device may not work as expected after an update. This can happen when there is an issue with the update or if another driver is in conflict with the one that was just updated. To fix this issue, you can roll back, or revert, the driver to the previous version.
