This video shows how to replace the M.2 2230 solid-state drive or SSD with a M.2 2280 SSD on the system board in a Precision 7865 Tower.
Before you begin, create a recovery drive and back up all data before removing the M.2 2230 SSD. Power off the computer and disconnect all the attached peripherals.
Ensure that you always use ESD protection when working inside the computer. To begin, insert the side-cover key and turn the key counter-clockwise to unlock the side cover.
Then push the release latch on the side cover and pull outwards to remove the side cover. Lay the computer on to its right side. Now let’s remove the air shroud, hold the air shroud at the gripping points and pull it outwards to remove it from the computer.
Disconnect the PSU-VGA cables from the connectors on the PCIe holder, and unroute the cables from the hook on the PCIe holder. Then, push the release latch and lift the holder vertically upwards to remove it from the computer.
To remove the M.2 2230 SSD, loosen the 4 captive screws and remove the M.2 SSD heatsink away from the computer. Now, remove the screw and slide the M.2 2230 SSD from the slot on the system board.
Repeat this step to remove the other M.2 2230 SSD from the second slot on the system board. You now successfully removed the M.2 2230 SSD.
Now, let’s install the M.2 2280 SSD. To begin, remove the standoff nut from the system board and replace it in the other screw hole for the M.2 2280 SSD.
Now, align the notch on the SSD with the tab on the SSD slot. Slide the SSD into the SSD slot on the system board. Then, replace the screw to secure the M.2 2280 SSD to the system board.
Repeat the previous steps to install the other M.2 2280 SSD to the second slot. And then, align the screw holes on the M.2 SSD heatsink with the screw holes on the system board.
Tighten the four screws to secure the M.2 SSD heatsink to the system board. You have now successfully installed the M.2 2280 SSD.
Align the PCIe holder and push vertically down until it clicks in place. Then slide the latch to lock it. Route the PSU-VGA cables through the hook, on the PCIe holder and connect the cables to the connectors on the holder.
Now let’s install the air shroud, hold the air shroud at the gripping points and push vertically down until it clicks in place. Close the side cover align the tabs on the side cover with the slots on the chassis, then move it inwards until it clicks in place.
Insert the side-cover key into the key slot and turn it clockwise to lock the computer. You can now connect all the peripherals. Connect the power adapter and press the power button to power on the computer.
