Hi there. In this video, we'll cover how to troubleshoot a possible fan failure noise within a Poweredge system. In this example, we'll show you how to identify if a fan has a physical failure and if it may need to be replaced.
Firstly, check if the PowerEdge is reporting a fan error. This can be found within the Ira 9 event log. Log into your iDrack and navigate to maintenance, then select System event log. Look to see if there are any errors referring to fan failures.
You can also navigate to the system tab and select cooling. Here you will find detailed information about the status of all the system fans. Check to see if there are any underperforming or showing any errors.
Once we have identified which fan is faulty or if there are no errors shown, the next step would be to physically inspect the fans for any visible faults. Fans can be inspected and swapped while the system is running.
Be careful when opening the lid of the server while the server is running as elements inside may be hopped or sharp. Inspect the fans and listen for any obvious signs of failure. This could be an irregular noise like scraping or scuffing.
Remove the fan and inspect it for any signs of physical damage. Sometimes debris or dust can cause the fan to become irregular. Cleaning the fan may help this in this case. Re-seat the fan, checking the connections for any signs of wear or damage.
If available, swap with another fan to see if the fault follows the fan or stays with the port. If the fan is identified as faulty, a replacement will need to be arranged.
If all the fans appear to be functioning normally, yet you're still seeing fan errors, refer to the knowledge base article in the description below for further diagnostic steps. And that's it.
Thanks for watching.
