How to Enable debug logging on NetWorker VMware Protection solution with the vProxy Appliance. When faced with unexpected behaviour with the NetWorker VMware Protection solution, it may be necessary to increase the logging level on the vProxy Appliance in order to get more details in the log files. Log into the vProxy appliance via SSH. In today's example we will use the putty utility. Authenticate with the admin account. Use the su command to switch users to the root account and provide the root password.
Locate the service file for the relevant vProxy process.
The service files are located in the /usr/lib/systemd/system directory. Change to the service files directory Locate the service file for the required process with the ls command. In this example, the vbackupd process log level will be raised from the default trace to debug. Edit the process file using the vi utility. Navigate to the ExecStart line with the arrows and place the cursor at the end of the line. hit the 'a' character to append to the end of the line. Append the vbackupd parameter option To save the chages hit the "ESC" key and then type colon, w, and q. This will write the changes and quit out of the vi editor. Reload the deamon configuration changes with systemctl daemon-reload command.
The vbackupd service then needs to be restarted when there are no backups in progress. Once it is verified there are no active backups, restart the daemon with the systemctl restart command. Confirm the service is active with the systemctl status command. While the backup is running or after the backup is completed, you can view the Debug output in the vbackup-engine.log log file. Navigate to the relevant log directory under /opt/emc/vproxy/runtime/logs/vbackupd. The vbackup-engine.log log file will contain debug messages Once the symptom is reproduced, you can disable the debug by removing the vbackupd parameter option in the vbackupd.service file. Navigate to the ExecStart line with the arrows and place the cursor at the end of the line. hit the 'x' character to remove the --program-log-level=debug characters from the line. To save the chages hit the ESC key and then type colon, w, and q.
