In this video, we will demonstrate how to remove and install the hard drive. Before removing the hard drive, read through the safety guidelines to protect your computer from potential damage and ensure your personal safety. To remove the base cover, loosen the four captive screws that secure the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. Remove the six screws that secure the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. Starting from the top-left corner use a plastic scribe to pry the base cover in the direction of the arrows to release the base cover from the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. Pry the base cover and turn it over. Disconnect the LED cable from the system board, if applicable.
Using the pull tab disconnect the battery cable from the system board and then turn your computer over and press the power button for 15 seconds to drain the flea power. Now, let’s remove the hard drive. Open the latch and disconnect the hard-drive cable from the system board.
Then, remove the three screws that secure the hard-drive assembly to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. Lift the hard-drive assembly, along with its cable off the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. Disconnect the interposer from the hard-drive assembly then remove the four screws that secure the hard-drive bracket to the hard drive. And finally, remove the hard drive from the hard-drive bracket.
You’ve successfully removed the hard drive. Now, let’s see how to install the hard drive. Align the screw holes on the hard-drive bracket with the screw holes on the hard drive then replace the four screws that secure the hard-drive bracket to the hard drive. Connect the interposer to the hard-drive assembly. Align the screw holes on the hard-drive assembly with the screw holes on the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
Then, replace the three screws that secure the hard-drive assembly to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. And finally, connect the hard-drive cable to the system board and close the latch to secure the cable. Once the hard drive is installed install the base cover back to the computer connect the battery cable to the system board and connect the LED cable to the system board, if applicable.
Then, align the screw holes to the base cover with the screw holes on the palm-rest and keyboard assembly and snap the base cover into place. Replace the six screws that secure the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
And then, finally, tighten the four captive screws that secure the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. The hard-drive installation process is now completed. For more information see the Service Manual at Dell.com/Support.
