Hello and welcome. In this video, I’ll introduce one of the most impactful new capabilities in Dell PowerProtect Data Manager and the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance: AI Assistant. AI Assistant is designed to simplify day-to-day cyber resilience operations and help administrators work faster and more confidently. AI Assistant delivers several key benefits.
It improves product learnability and accelerates onboarding by acting as a centralized, conversational knowledge resource. It helps reduce time to resolution by correlating job failures, system health indicators, and relevant Dell knowledge base guidance.
It also supports improved SLA compliance through real-time visibility into protection status and overall system health, while streamlining common administrative workflows with guided navigation and actionable recommendations. AI Assistant connects to a Dell-qualified large language model that can be deployed either on premises within the customer’s environment or in a managed cloud environment.
This flexible deployment model allows customers to meet strict regulatory, compliance, and data residency requirements. Only metadata and authorized telemetry are used to generate responses, ensuring enterprise-grade security and control. AI Assistant combines real-time product telemetry with Retrieval Augmented Generation, or RAG.
By grounding large language model responses in live system data and curated Dell product knowledge, it delivers contextual, conversational insights directly within the PowerProtect Data Manager interface. Configuration of the AI Assistant is performed directly within the PowerProtect Data Manager interface. Administrators enable the feature through the settings menu and configure connectivity by providing the base URL, API key, and model name for the external LLM endpoint.
The supported models are available through the Dell Enterprise Hub within the Hugging Face ecosystem and can be deployed in cloud or secure on-premises environments. Administrators can interact with the AI Assistant using natural language to retrieve real-time operational data from their PowerProtect Data Manager environment.
This includes visibility into configured protection policies, registered assets, assets without existing backup copies, storage systems, failed job details, and overall system health. Responses are enriched with clickable navigation links, allowing administrators to move seamlessly from insight to execution.
When troubleshooting failed backups, the AI Assistant correlates job failure data with system health and relevant Dell knowledge base articles. Based on asset characteristics and historical data, it can also recommend appropriate protection policies using an asset similarity algorithm, helping administrators make informed configuration decisions. With user approval, the AI Assistant supports a key set of targeted operational actions.
These include adding assets to protection policies and initiating ad hoc backups for assets that are already protected but currently have no backup copies. These capabilities are enabled by tools that connect with Data Manager Service API’s and help streamline routine administrative tasks while maintaining control and oversight.
With AI Assistant on PowerProtect Data Manager and Data Manager Appliance, Dell delivers an intelligent, secure, and extensible AI experience that enhances operational efficiency, shortens troubleshooting cycles, and enables intelligent cyber resilienceacross hybrid and cloud environments.
