Software RAID configuration to assign and unassign hot spares using iDRAC Service Module

The Software RAID feature on iDRAC Service Module (iSM) enables you to assign and unassign the global hot spares and dedicated hot spares on Dell PowerEdge 14th, and newer generation of servers running on Microsoft Windows operating systems.

In this video, you will learn how to assign and unassigned the global hot spare and dedicated hot spare on Microsoft Windows using Idrac service module. Before you begin, ensure to install IDX service module and enable the software raid feature on the host operating system.

Now open the command prompt to display the help options type the command D CS M CFG dot E face hyphen W raid and press enter the help options for the software R configuration is displayed to create a virtual disk type, the command D CS M CFG dot E space, hyphen W space, hyphen CTRL ID equal zero space, hyphen CVD space, hyphen RL equal and then enter the rate level space, hyphen PD equal and enter the physical dis ids separated by commas space. Hyphen A DH S equals and then enter the virtual disk id and then press enter the virtual disk is created successfully and the message is displayed to get the information of the virtual disk type.

The command DCIS M CFG dot YX space, hyphen W A space hyphen get VD and press enter. Notice that the virtual dis information is displayed to get the details of the physical disks type to command DCIS M CFG dot E space hyphen W Rade space, hyphen get PD and press enter the physical disk information is displayed to assign a dedicated hot spare type. The command DCIS M CFG dot E space hyphen sw ray space hyphen CTRL ID equal zero space hyphen A DH S equals and then enter the physical dis ids space hyphen VD equal and then enter the virtual dis ID and then press enter the dedicated hot spare is assigned to the virtual disk. And the message is displayed to check the information of the physical disks type.

The command DCIS M CFG dot E space hyphen sw A space hyphen GP D and press enter, notice that the physical disk information is displayed to un assign a dedicated hot spare type, the command DCIS CFG dot EX space hyphens wray space, hyphen CTRL ID equals zero space hyphen HS equal and then enter the physical dis ids space hyphen VD equal and enter the virtual dis I and then press enter the dedicated hot spare is unassigned from the virtual disk. And the message is displayed to view the information of the physical disk type.

The command DCIS M CFG dot E space hyphen W space hyphen get PD and press enter the physical disk information is displayed to assign a global hots spare type, the command DCIS MCF G dot E space hyphen S wray space, hyphen CTRL ID equal zero space, hyphen GHS equal and to enter the physical dis id and then press enter the global hot spare is assigned to the physical disk. And the message is displayed to get the details of physical disks type. The command DCIS M CFG dot E space hyphen W A space hyphen get PD. Notice that the physical disk information is displayed to un assign the global hot spare type.

The command DCIS CFG dot EXZ space hyphen W ray space, hyphen CTRL id equal zero space hyphen GHS equal and enter the physical dis ids and then press enter the global hot spare is unassigned from the physical disk. And the message is displayed to verify the information of the physical disks type. The command DCIS M CFG dot YXE space, hyphen W space hyphen get PD and press enter. Notice that the available physical disk information is displayed to perform these operations on multiple virtual disks or physical disks.
