Symptoms

Customer impact may show inability to use SDNAS storage for User Profile Disk storage in Microsoft Windows.

How to identify this issue:
Setting the destination of the UPD storage to an SDNAS SMB share the user sees the following error in the Windows client:
 
Could not create the template VHD. Error Message:
Unable to connect to WMI on server
my.nas.server error: The RPC server is unavailable.
(Exception from HRESULT: 0800706BA)
An SMB trace of the traffic shows the following:

Cause

The feature requires specific WMI capabilities which are not provided by non-Windows NAS storage. The same behavior is noted across the industry (Unity, Isilon, NetApp, so on).

Resolution

Workaround: Use Windows Server connected using block to serve out an SMB share for UPD storage.
