Upgrading VMware Tool to 12.1

There are two options to upgrade VMware tool.

  • Uninstall the third-party VMware tools and install the official SUSE open-vm-tools, the latter is upgraded by the Rollup.
  • Keep VMware tools installed and upgrade those tools manually, using VMware known procedures.

Installing Official SUSE VMware Tools Manually

Follow these steps to install official SUSE VMware tools manually:

  1. Extract security rollup for proxy to get RPM files.
  2. Download the following files:
    • libdrm2-2.4.97-2.28.x86_64.rpm
    • libmspack0-0.4-15.10.1.x86_64.rpm
    • libvmtools0-12.1.0-4.45.1.x86_64.rpm
    • libxmlsec1-1-1.2.28-8.2.1.x86_64.rpm
    • libxmlsec1-openssl1-1.2.28-8.2.1.x86_64.rpm
    • open-vm-tools-12.1.0-4.45.1.x86_64.rpm
  3. Apply these files on proxy as root in order:
cd /tmp
rpm -ivh libdrm2-2.4.97-2.28.x86_64.rpm
rpm -ivh libmspack0-0.4-15.10.1.x86_64.rpm
rpm -ivh libvmtools0-12.1.0-4.45.1.x86_64.rpm
rpm -ivh libxmlsec1-1-1.2.28-8.2.1.x86_64.rpm
rpm -ivh libxmlsec1-openssl1-1.2.28-8.2.1.x86_64.rpm
rpm -ivh open-vm-tools-12.1.0-4.45.1.x86_64.rpm
  1. Disable vmware-tools and enable vmtoolsd function:
systemctl stop vmware-tools
systemctl disable vmware-tools
systemctl enable vmtoolsd
systemctl start vmtoolsd
  1. Reboot proxy.
