Symptoms

Backup of a SQL Server fails in mirrored configuration where a custom port for mirrored instance is used.

Error:

153887:(pid 33836): Microsoft SQL server documentation provides details about the following SQL Server Provider error:
38008:(pid 33836): SQL Server Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF]. 
153416:(pid 33836): (Error: -1)
66212 4/19/2018 1:48:08 PM (pid33836) NSR critical Cannot login to SQL Server SERVER NAME\INSTANCE NAME.

A custom port was used for the mirrored SQL instance.

Cause

NMM SQL VDI backups must connect to the mirrored instance during SQL Server backups.  If a nondefault port is used to configured mirrored instance, NMM cannot make this connection hence the backup fails with above error.

Resolution

  1. Log in to the NetWorker Management Console (NMC) or NetWorker Web User Interface (NWUI):
  2. Go to Protection -> Clients.
  3. Open the SQL VDI client's properties.
  4. In the Apps and Modules tab, set the NSR_MIRROR_INSTANCE_PORT=<custom port> in the Application Information field.
