PowerFlex: How to Retrieve Device Paths in HBA Pass Through with Linux based or SVM

Summary: Retrieve the OS device paths in a Linux-based or ESXi based Storage Virtual Machine (SVM) server PowerFlex system with an HBA330 controller.

In Linux-based systems or systems running ESXi SVM, the OS device path is in the following format: /dev/sdX, where X is a sequential letter of the alphabet in lowercase, in single or multiple format. For example: a, b, c…z, followed by aa, ab, ac…zz.

Steps

  1. Log in to the server.
  2. Display the device list:
    ls –l /dev/disk/by-path/
    Output similar to the following appears: 
    powerflex list device by path
  3. In the output, search for the lines starting with:
    pci-0000:0#: 00.0-sas-

    Where is a number. (For example: 2 or 3.)

  4. In the lines you located, search for sdX at the end of the lines.
    The devices paths are /dev/sdX. Use these paths when adding devices to a PowerFlex SDS.
