Cisco: MDS 9700 with Supervisor 4 module resets

Summary: MDS 9700 switches with a supervisor 4 module (DS-X97-SF4-K9) may reboot, causing a switchover.

Symptoms

Issue only applies to MDS 9700 series switches using Supervisor 4 modules (DS-X97-SF4-K9).

A Supervisor 4 randomly resets. The show system reset-reason for the affected supervisor shows the reset reason as:

Reason: Kernel Panic

The following syslog message about 'device sdb4' may be logged:

%KERN-2-SYSTEM_MSG: [1294828.221287] EXT3-fs error (device sdb4): ext3_get_group_desc: Group descriptor not loaded - block_group = 0, group_desc = 0, desc = 0 - kernel

Cause

Cisco bug CSCvt32044   - Kernel Panic on supervisor 4

Note:  This issue only applies to MDS 9700 Supervisor 4 module (DS-X97-SF4-K9).

 

 

Resolution

Fix:
None

Workaround:
Disabling NTP may prevent the issue occurring.

Note: This issue is rare, and after switchover the switch appears healthy.
