Dell NativeEdge: USB Controller Passthrough Claim Fails on GW3200 Devices

Summary: In NativeEdge environments, attempting to enable USB controller passthrough for a virtual machine (VM) on Gateway 3200 (EGW3200) results in VM update failure. This behavior is not a defect but a platform limitation, as USB controller passthrough is only supported on EGW5200 devices and not on EGW3200. ...

Symptoms

  • VM update fails when configuring USB controller passthrough using advanced parameter:
hw.enable.usb.controller: true
  • Error observed during VM update:
failed to update vm: internal error: process exited while connecting to monitor
  • Deployment status moves to error state
  • The VM does not claim the USB Controller after update
  • Behavior occurs on GW3200 devices
  • The same operation may succeed on other supported hardware

Cause

USB controller passthrough capability is hardware-dependent in the current implementation:
  • Supported platform: EGW5200
  • Unsupported platform: EGW3200
When the feature is attempted on unsupported hardware:
  • VM update attempts to apply unsupported hypervisor configuration
  • Results in failure during VM reconfiguration process

Resolution

Current Status

  • This is working as designed
  • This is hardware-dependent
