Data Domain: Slow read performance from cloud DDVEs with Active Tier on Object Storage

Summary: This article describes expected performance for Data Domain Virtual Edition (DDVE) using Active Tier on Object Storage (ATOS).

Symptoms

Read performance is poor from an ATOS cloud DDVE.

Cause

Sustained read performance from a cloud DDVE may be lower than expected. For example, single stream sustained reads from a 96 TB Azure cloud instance are usually around 7 MB/s, but may be lower or as high as 11 MB/s. Different cloud providers may provide slightly different results, and performance varies across different storage configurations. Larger instances generally yield higher stream throughput.

Resolution

This is expected behavior when using object storage with single streams. Multiple streams should be used whenever possible to increase total throughput.

Additional Information

As of DD OS 7.2, Multi Stream Restore (MSR) is enabled for ATOS DDVEs to improve read performance. This requires the 96 TB instance type. The system does not necessarily need 96 TB of licensed capacity, but it does require the corresponding 64 GiB of RAM required for a 96 TB instance. This feature can change the read performance from 7-10 MB/s to 35-50 MB/s.
