Note: The Management Controller (MC) and Storage Controller (SC) are separate subsystems on ME Series arrays. The array continues to serve I/O; however, all management interfaces (UI, SSH, Serial, SNMP, or Redfish/Swordfish REST API) may be unresponsive. Storage data access is typically unaffected unless otherwise noted.

 

Symptoms 

One or more of the following may be observed:

  • PowerVault Manager User Interface (UI) is inaccessible.
  • Unable to open an SSH session to one or both management interfaces.
  • UI is stuck at 0%, 14%, or 80% of loading and does not progress.
  • Login page does not load in any browser.
  • The array does not respond to or has disappeared from external management applications (SNMP or REST API).
  • Password or credentials are not accepted.
  • Management port is intermittently disconnecting.

Step 1: Verify Network Connectivity

Before attempting any other steps, confirm that you have basic network connectivity to the management interface.

  1. Ping the management IP address of both Controller A and Controller B from your workstation.
    1. If ping fails, check the array is switch on, physical cabling to the management ports, switch configuration, and VLAN settings.
    2. If the IP address was recently changed, ensure you are using the updated address.
  2. Check the management port link state on the switch. Verify the port shows as connected and is not disabled.
  3. Verify your workstation is on the correct network/VLAN to reach the management interface.
  4. If ping succeeds but the GUI is still unreachable, proceed to the next step.

 

Step 2: Browser and Client-Side Issues

Several access failures are caused by the browser or the workstation rather than the array itself.

  1. Clear browser cache and cookies. Stale cached data can prevent the management interface from loading correctly.    
  2. Try a different browser (e.g., switch from Chrome to Edge or Firefox) or use a private/incognito window to rule out extension conflicts.  If your browsers incognito/private mode works this typically points to cache or browser plugin issues.
  3. Disable local proxy settings on your workstation. A local or corporate HTTP proxy may intercept or block the HTTPS connection to the array.
  4. If the PowerVault Manager is configured to use HTTPS, ensure that your browser can use TLS 1.2. Verify that the browser is set to allow cookies, at least for the IP addresses of the storage system network ports.
  5. By default, the system is loaded with self-signed certificates. Your browser may display a security warning on first connection — accept the exception and proceed.
  6. Try accessing the PowerVault Manager UI from a different workstation to eliminate local proxy or firewall issues.

 

Step 3: Restart the Management Controller (MC) via SSH

This is the most commonly effective resolution for an unresponsive management interface.

 

Note: Restarting management services does not reboot controllers or disrupt I/O. The effect of restarting is an inability to access the management interface for approximately ~3 minutes.

 

Prerequisites: You must be able to ping the management IP address (see Step 1).

 

  1. Open an SSH client (e.g., PuTTY) and connect to the management IP address of Controller A or Controller B using port 22.
  2. Log in with a manage or administrator level account.
  3. Run the following command to restart the management controller (MC) service on both controllers:
    restart mc both full
  4. Wait approximately ~3 minutes, then attempt to access the PowerVault Manager UI again.
  5. If the PowerVault Manger UI is still inaccessible, try SSH on the other controller's IP address and repeat.

    Note: If neither SSH nor the GUI is accessible, proceed to Step 6 (physical intervention).

 

Step 4: Certificate / SSL Issues

If the management interface became inaccessible after uploading or modifying a security certificate:

  1. The storage system supports use of unique certificates for secure data communications, to authenticate the storage systems being managed. Use of authentication certificates applies to the HTTPS protocol, used by the web server in each controller module.

  2. By default, the system generates a unique SSL certificate for each controller.

  3. If a custom certificate was incorrectly installed and has locked out access to both controllers, you will need SSH or serial console access to the array to remediate.

  4. Use the CLI to regenerate the default certificate: (you must be on firmware ME5.1.2.2.1 or later)

Step 5: Post-Firmware Upgrade Access Issues

If the management interface became inaccessible after a firmware upgrade:

  1. Wait at least 5–10 minutes for the firmware activation and controller reboot process to fully complete.
  2. Try the MC restart via SSH (Step 3) if SSH is available.
  3. If SSH is also unavailable, proceed to Step 6 (controller reseat).

 

Step 6: Physical Intervention – Controller Reseat or Power Cycle

If SSH is inaccessible and the UI cannot be reached:

 

Dual controller systems:

 

Caution: Host multipathing must be configured with redundant paths, otherwise a maintenance window is required.

 

  1. Physically pull controller module B forward in its slot by approximately five centimeters or two inches, then reseat the controller module after 30 seconds. Allow approximately two or three minutes for controller B to complete boot and firmware load.
  2. Open an SSH session to the Controller B management IP address and log in as a manage level user, then restart peer Storage Controller A.

 

Single controller or non-redundant configuration:

 

Caution: Unexpectedly removing the single path to data means that the host loses access to data and stops responding. A maintenance window is required.

 

  1. Notify users of the outage and follow the host operating system user guide to put the connected host in maintenance mode or shut down hosts. At the array rear, switch off both power supplies for approximately 60 seconds before turning them on again. Allow approximately three minutes for the controllers to complete boot and load firmware.

 

Step 7: Upgrade Controller Firmware

Once access has been restored, it is strongly recommended to upgrade controller firmware.

Upgrade to controller firmware ME5.1.2.2.1 or later. 

PowerVault firmware can be downloaded from dell.com/support Select your PowerVault model.

To upgrade:

  1. Go to Maintenance > Firmware > System and upload the firmware binary file. Then click the "Activate this Version" link to display the dialog and follow the on-screen directions to start the activation.  More detail in ME5 Series Administrator's Guide - Maintenance section

 

Step 8: Contact Dell Technical Support

If none of the above steps restore access to the PowerVault Manager:

  1. Collect support logs if possible. Refer to: PowerVault ME5, ME52: How to collect PowerVault support logs
  2. If SSH was available at any point, save the CLI output from the session to share with Dell support.
  3. Contact Dell Technical Support for further assistance.
