Data Domain: Filesystem Panic During PPDM Recipe Replication | mrepl_send_file: I/O error

Summary: Data Domain systems may experience repeated filesystem panics during recipe replication when using PowerProtect Data Manager (PPDM) backups. This occurs due to incorrect handling of zero-length base files created by PPDM’s capacity-optimized workflow. ...

Symptoms

Filesystem panics repeatedly during mtree replication.
Error message in logs:
PANIC: ddr/repl/lrepl_client.c: mrepl_send_file: 16629: repl ctx 10:22: mrepl_send_file: I/O error
Replication jobs fail with I/O errors.
System enters panic state to protect data integrity.

Cause

  • PPDM’s TDSM capacity-optimized workflow creates a zero-length backup that serves as a basefile for replication.
  • Replication code incorrectly interprets the zero-length basefile as corruption.
  • Data Domain reports this as an I/O error, triggering a DDFS panic to safeguard data integrity.

Resolution

Permanent Fix:

  • Issue resolved in the following DDOS releases:
    • 7.7.5.20
    • 7.10.1.10
    • 7.12.0.0 and later

Upgrade to one of these versions to prevent the panic condition.

Workaround:

  • Disable recipe replication on the source Data Domain system using SE mode.
  • A filesystem restart is not required.
  • Important: SE commands have been deprecated in:
    • DDOS 7.7.5.25
    • DDOS 7.10.1.15
    • DDOS 7.13.0.15
    • DDOS 6.2.1.110 and above
  • SE commands are accessible only by Dell employees.
